Knowing consent, of course. I.E., it’s not asked before they send it. But I guess legality means they don’t have to, it’s just Steam asks just to take their survey so why can’t EA ask before they ship off that data to other companies?
It’s not that I think Origin is bad or anything, I’ve never used it. It’s just that with this I don’t want to have to download fifty different digital distributors to play different games that I want.
It probably won’t get that far but having another client apart from Steam is just a minor annoyance :3 .
What is the main point of origin, anyway? Is it to help prevent piracy?
I don’t really see any reason for EA to implement it otherwise. If it’s to compete with Steam, well that’s just a lost cause.
I can’t imagine that services like Steam or Origin will prevent piracy that much. It’s just like Kairouseki said, I don’t want another Steam only because the game is published by EA. It’s the same thing with YouTube and Facebook, it’s pointless to create other video platforms or social networks when there already the biggest one in the world exists and you can’t beat it. That’s my point of view. I don’t need second Steam.
Agreed. EA is just being their normal irrational selves.
I’m on the fence about this one. i could get it on the xbox and play it with all my friends, or i could play it on my really nice gaming computer and have my information sold to pharmaceutical and penis enlargement companies. i understand that companies like Google put forth the notion that it makes eCommerce more efficient, but you should at least have a choice. perhaps some people just simply want to play the game, and not have to worry about this shit, Hardly complaining if you ask me.
And when people who picked up and played half life 2 on release day found out that the game wouldn’t install without steam, they got all in a huff too because it was “an unnecessary step.” But look where steam is now? They’re the standardized digital medium for video game purchases. It’s just like social networking, people get all in a frazzle when there’s some minor change to the UI but 2 weeks later they succumb to the changes and move on like nothing happened.
Accepting the EULA implies that you have read all of it’s contents and agree to abide by them. Regardless of whether you actually read them or not, by accepting you’ve told the company that you have. You should read the rights in some of the EULA’s sometime. Pretty much every company now throws in a line or two reserving the rights to cancel any paid services without notice or reason and to collect your personal information for internal purposes (usually demographics).
Back then though, there was no good alternative, and that is what Steam has evolved to. It’s not the same scenario at all, since now we already have something good that really doesn’t need to be replaced.
I was merely using it as an example. The fact still remains that people are just complaining out of laziness and they don’t want to spend the time or energy to download, install, or launch another game host. I was merely pointing out that people do this for everything that has a change involved no matter how minor it is, and then accept that it’s not all that bad once they actually get to using it.
Its completely reasonable not to want to have to use multiple digital distribution platforms.
Lets say that you have a hobby of making videos. And you need multiple softwares to do this. Video editing software, sounding editing stuff or whatever point is a couple of softwares. Now would you put each of those softwares on different computers or 1 computer? You could still switch between computers for each task and get it done. Still you would probably put everything on one computer. Obviously you want everything in one place because its faster and convenient. Same applies to gamers and not wanting another digital distribution.
I wish I could get into Battlefield that easily, but being tainted by CoD, I can’t seem to be all that excited… WHAT HAVE I BECOME? :’(
A gamer.

First comment said it best.
“And there, boys and girls, is your REAL reason for EA not putting Battlefield 3 on Steam.”
Didn’t everybody know this already?
First time it’s been confirmed officially from the rumors that retail copies will all require Origin.
It was already known that all copies on digital distributors will require it, though.
how do you pronounce Guillotine? just confused
