Theoretically it could be debris from earth when an object collided into it during the early years of existance, which caused the earth to tilt on its axis, a so called First Impact.
That’s actually the generally accepted reason, except there is no evidence since the collision occurred when the planet was still cooling and was mostly comprised of molten rock. When the moon flew off, it formed a ball via its spin. The Earth recovered the gaping hole because, as stated, much of the Earth was still molten at the time.
to make it easier for some people on this forum:without that collision life wouldn’t exist on this planet. The moon made the water level change over time and life became possible. At least that’s what I understand from the “Walking with monsters” documantery(can’t spell for shit again).
You mean human life. I’m sure aquatic animals would have been fine.
What is this “water” everyone keeps talking about? Is it important? I mean, more important than alcohol?
There are actually huge clouds of alcohol out there in space. Top Australian and Irish scientists are working out how to collect it as we speak.
HOW CAN I HELP?!
The moon would serve as an intermediate colony between Earth and Mars. It potentially could serve as port in the trade route and possibly also serve as a refuelling facility. Though it would not have any kind of self-sufficiency.
SPORE much?
Bacteria from space could still travel on meteors and stuff and get off when it crashes into the planet.
mm, nano space pron!
Extreme selective reading.
In your case I think it’s better to sit back and not interfere with anything.
Well from what I read, there were quanitys of water from the India satilite. N.A.S.A I thought had there own module on the way which should confirm or deny this. Having a fair amount of water on the moon will make it alot more plausable to have a permanet base on the moon. Apart from the pretty incredible fact of mankind settling on a spacial object apart form earth in a more or less permanet basis, it will allow a launch pad to the exploriation and theoreticaly possible colinisation of mars.
And the implications of that are pretty profound. Its one step closer to all those sci fi fiction we’ve read over the years. Not that well see it in our life time tho.
But the technology created by the attempts could change are lives in signifigant way. In the last drive for space some incredible things happened. For one thing we wouldnt have mobile phones, G.P.S and er teflon (its suprisingly usefull.)
Although those who’ve played doom3 maybe might think setling on mars may not be a great idea!
and besides the way were spannering this plannet it couldnt hurt to have a plan B.
And then there is the fundamental issue of why you want to build a base on mars. What service does it serve that is so important that the money spend elsewhere would not do more?
Just do it for the lulz.
Yeah, I don’t understand the infatuation with living on Mars. There’s no air, now liquid water, and it’s cold as tits. Sounds like a recipe for a good time.
good for eskimo`s…just kidding. But it wouldn´t serve a purpose to make a colony on mars since it´s already populated by Aliens.
And one third or one fifth the gravity (I can never remember which). That’s a big one that people always forget.
