My Vision of Black Mesa/Half-Life Series

Call this nitpicking if you will, and it’s not a complaint just an observation.
I know this is meant to play “old school” and it’s not Half-Life style and the devs aren’t an AAA studio…

And no worries, I keep in mind that this “just a mod” and not a retail game, but maybe some more:

-physics
-particle and lighting effects (the flickering at the start of Questionable Ethics is just nice)
-scripted sequences (like “Who is this guy, Freeman?” HECU convo)
-cutscenes (in a style of HL2 intro or even just add the “prepare for unforeseen consequences” scene from the trailer into the mod as Gordon wakes up after Resonance Cascade to give it some sense of mystery and creepiness)

It would make it feel more “professional” rather than “fanmade”
/opinions?

And you suggest that after the mod is done?

Ok…

More physics sounds good. There’s never anything wrong with more physics. :retard:

Done?

  1. No Xen
  2. Mods are meant to be moddable
  1. He means done to Xen, of course.

  2. Modifiable doesn’t necessarily mean remaking. They have bugs to fix. They may make some tweaks in response to feedback. They’re creating BM-DM. They’re creating Xen. They’ll have to do some work to put it on Steam. All at the same time. I suspect that adding significant features to the game is highly unlikely at this time.

Cut scenes are used for narrative purposes. Good writing doesn’t need cut scenes. Occasionally, they may be necessary, but they’re annoying and break immersion. The use of cut scenes isn’t a sign of professionalism, but of writing problems - they’re seamy.

It’s very professional. I had one game-breaking bug, the same can’t be said for the original Half-Life release.

Bravo, mate.

/thread

I don’t see how adding cutscenes would make it more professional. I would take being able to move around while talking to G-man any day over sitting there being forced to look at his face.

#2, adding anything G-man related where he talks before the end would just be stupid. The whole mysterious element surrounding G-man is that you have no idea who he is and he keeps popping up everywhere. There was a very good reason Valve didn’t make G-man talk to you until the end.

Not talking about remaking the game, but for example before the fight with the Osprey (where an infinite number of HECU are coming till it’s shot down) the camera could show it flying in there, because not just the player (assuming one hasn’t played Half-Life before) has no idea about it’s presence, but also that shooting the soldiers for 10 minutes or more is nothing but pointless.

Half-Life is old school/hardcore game and this remake is mostly for veterans, but there are casual players as well, likely turned off by some features of lack thereof.

Another one that comes to my mind is the first Gargantua encounter… might not be that obvious to a new player that he or she isn’t meat to try and kill it despite witnessing the combat scene between the monster and third party as being unsuccessful, thus some do waste ammo and die.
The guard yelling and shooting tentacles as they smash him along with some explosives given was a clear enough indication about what to do for example.

Just notice many threads around with “I’m lost/got stuck”

Physics still can be implemented into Xen or even Deathmatch, but that’s likely asking for too much.

More lighting and particle effects aren’t that hard to add I guess, I’m not asking for another Lambda Complex Teleporter or Anti-Mass Spectrometer… just that passage at the start of Questionable Ethics made it distinctive and this is how I think visuals should be used, to syncs with the music, environments and action and be memorable.

The first HECU encounter I also imagine as portrayed from the perspective of either him or the shot scientist.
Under “cutscenes” of course I mean just scripted camera angles.

I did expect the G-man speech from the trailer to show up in the game, was kinda disappointed to not find it there.

EDIT: this can be merged with “is Black Mesa Valve quality?” thread I guess, as such question may be risen from this.

I’m personally against the “camera” moments… If my memory serves me well, the main idea and innovation of Half-Life series is the lack of those “cutscenes”. You are Gordon from the start to finish, without interruptions. If you notice the osprey, you notice it. If you don’t - you don’t. I think it’s one of the things that make this game great. You’re facing the difficulties with Gordon without any help, and it gives a great feel to the game. In my opinion, it should remain this way.

What more could they add?

The particles and lights are already on par if not higher than most AAA games.
Not very surprising for a PC exclusive.

No, thank you.
Keep that shit in trashy CoD clones.

I’d rather have some of the bugs and balance issues tweaked.

Well, everyone has an opinion.
Even HL2 series and Portal series have these things.

In fact HL2 and Portal are junk developed to raise some money.
The only people who really LOVE HL2 and episodes are fanboys or fangirls, I bet no fans of HL1 can say that they love HL2 and episodes.
But back in topic: no for all the reasons others stated above, I agree with each one of them.

Wut. :expressionless:

For the rest of the post, it’s nice to see that you agree with someone at least.

I think cutscenes are fine as long as they are G-Man only (he’s meant to be mysterious anyway). Otherwise it takes immersion out of it.

I agree that more scripted sentences and sequences would have made the mod even better. Just no forced camera-angles please… unless a G-Man sequence is going on (which only happens at the end of the Xen levels anyway).

EDIT: Come to think of it, I agree that all of those things would make the mod better. But it’s not like it’s already great as-is.

I’d personally like to see a cutscene right after endgame after you complete xen of epic proportions when the credits roll…

G-Man Speech first similar to HL2

credits roll over cutscenes of Black Mesa being Nuked

And seeing the devastaion and ruins in flames afterwards… Army pulling out or not clearing safe distance

Perhaps footage of a blackbird spyplane taking photos from high altitude after the mushroom cloud stuff like this

Gman like normal and the devastation in Source Film Maker

This is what I mean, the credits background is all black, some images from all over the game being shown during the music would be nice touch.

WTF!!!

Just nuke the damn place

It’s a puzzle. BM is a remake of Half-Life, it has puzzles, it’s not CoD.

BM is a remake of Half-Life, it has puzzles, it’s not CoD.

It’s a puzzle. BM is a remake of Half-Life, it has puzzles, it’s not CoD.

BM is a remake of Half-Life, it has puzzles, it’s not CoD.

Black Mesa is a remake of Half-Life. It has puzzles. It’s not CoD. I was a little surprised that this was ever an issue, because it doesn’t seem so long ago to me that Half-Life was released, but I guess I have to face the fact that a new generation snuck in there somewhere in that time. But honestly, at this point, are there still people that don’t understand that? It’s a remake of Half-Life, it’s not CoD. People can say “I know that, Zen.”, but I don’t think they’ve actually come to the realization of what that means.

Those kinds of complaints are a little sad, because it means that some people don’t understand or appreciate Half-Life, and by extension, don’t understand or appreciate Black Mesa. Some people expect the world to come to them or conform to their own understanding or preconceived notions, and they miss it.
