hi guys, need help with finding a new mobo feeling slightly overwhelmed, something thatll support an i5 750 onwards and i7’s (if possible) and has 6 ddr3 channels capable of 1333mhz upwards. thanks. :retard:
not to pricey either guys i looked at gigabyte ones but theres so many to choose from.
I can only recommend from personal experience but Gigabyte boards are generally pretty solid. I can also recommend Asus. In the past I have had problems with Abit boards. Unfortunately I am not quite sure which chipset to recommend as I am unfamiliar with the current generation, but you’ll most likely want P55.
I bought my first ASUS mobo in 03, it had 4 different owners, outlived 2 CPU’s, at least 8 ram sticks, like 10 hard drives, 3 video cards and survived 2 dead PSU’s and every part of the board still works perfectly.
You’re not getting 6 channels of DDR3 anywhere. If you mean triple channel, which I’m sure you do, then that’s 1366 exclusive and you won’t be getting that with an i5.
If you’re at all interested in i7, go 1366 and not 1156 because the 1156 (8xx series) i7s all suck compared to the 1366 (9xx series) i7s.
Honestly the only reason for 1156 is the i5, although it is a pretty good reason.
I started out with an ASUS P5E as my first mobo and I loved it. Im currently using an ASUS Rampage II Extreme and its taken everything i’ve thrown at it, including a leak in my water cooling, without even breaking a sweat. I have a couple of friends with ASUS boards too and they love it. ASUS boards are great for overclocking too.
And this is just my opinion, but it seems odd that you’re potentially spending $240US on a motherboard, $280US on the processor, and $190US on memory, but going with a $150US videocard. If you can manage a bit more in the GPU budget, you could swing a 5830, and if you are planning to upgrade in the very near future you could just drop $30US on like a GeForce 5xxx series to carry you until you can get a 5850 or something. Unless, of course, you don’t truly need a powerful GPU, then ignore everything I said
As for 920 vs. 930, from my research the 930 has higher base clock (additional multiplier) and overclocks a bit worse than the 920 (pretty much what you mentioned), but on NewEgg the price difference is only $9US.
Cheers bud, in the uk it seems there is roughly a $60 price gap, £40.
so i can pay £179.99 for a i7 920 D0 step. or £220 for 930 (it appears 920 is alot freindlier by overclockers etc) as for the GPU dude, i think thatd be a good idea, just wait out until i can get a nicer graphics card. would be easier on the bill atm until i get paid and can splash a bit more out.
