rip steve
so am i the only one who thinks this new start menu that windows 8 uses really isnt that bad? it closes and opens instantaneously, making the fact that its fullscreen really not that bad. if it had to load, it would be fucking shitty, but its doesnt. it’s really fine, guys.
anyone have any arguments against the fullscreen start menu that aren’t ‘i dont like change’?
More like there was no point in changing it. Why would you want every single thing in your OS to be fullscreen? It’s less that people don’t like change and more that people don’t like unnecessary change.
Not only was the change unnecessary, but you could only put individual executables rather than organize into folders for specific programs. So instead of having a drop box for the executable, the uninstaller, and the readme, you would have seperate icons in the tile spread on Win 8 for the executable and the installer or anything else. Lots of visual clutter that no one asked for.
also, full screen means that anything else youre doing is interrupted; with classic start menu at the very least you always have visual continuity with whatever you’r doing
Yup. It’s a terrible mess.
I’ve gotten used to no start menu after months of using 8. The metro interface is crap tho, no other way about it but thankfully 8.1 lets me skip directly to the desktop on boot. Despite that, I don’t hate W8 the way many people do but I understand perfectly why they do. MS handled it with the same care a mean kid handles his fragile toys but they seem to have listened to people’s complain and are working to improve it over time.
Adding the start menu back is a step in the right direction, as they seem to have initially forgotten that computers are not tablets.
My Win8.1 laptop has a touchscreen. If I didn’t have a touchscreen, I get the feeling that Win8 would have annoyed me to hell.
Basically, the touchscreen makes certain features of Win8 quite bearable. I actually really like the snap feature for Win8 apps (given that I have a touchscreen… with just a mouse, I’d probably go crazy trying to use it). The snap feature gives a certain flexibility to my workflow that I can’t get with normal desktop windows. Of course, it would really help if most of the Windows 8 apps weren’t complete crap… I’m looking at you, W8 Chrome, W8 Skype, and W8 Facebook… :hmph:
That aside, I like the revised file explorer window and how it gives more options and keyboard shortcuts for a lot of different common actions. I also think that the reduced startup time and “hybrid” shutdown is really nice. If Windows 8 were nothing but an update to the startup time and the file explorer, I’d have loved it a lot more.
The only saving grace of the Win8 tiles is that you can start typing and it will quickly auto search as you type, making it potentially much faster than having to search drop-down menus.
Tbh guys, I don’t see any point for me upgrading to Win 8/8.1 since Microsoft developing Windows 9, which is expected to be released next year anyway.
much rather wait for windows 9 (or whatever they may call it later on) where we receive a proper desktop experience and better performance overall and better API (Direct 3D/X 12)
hopefully a more open platform like it was pre-win8; nobody wanted GFWL, nobody on pc will want the MS store (unless they do a smart thing and make Halo for pc and sale it exclusively via MS store; Spartan Assault doesnt count)
If you already have Windows 8 then you may as well just upgrade to 8.1 because it’s a free download. If you still have Windows 7, then yeah it’s probably better to wait and see what Windows 9 has to offer.
Well I actually have W7 since the day I build my custom PC few years.
But yeah it’s best wait and see what Microsoft has to offer for W9, if the W9 hasn’t received well from the general public, then the Linux SteamOS will probably or not my next operating system to install.
Now I am aware that Linux doesn’t have many features like Windows has i.g. DirectX, etc, but we’ll see when the SteamOS turns out after they finish their beta.
What a GROUNDBREAKING achievement! Microsoft is so inventive!
^This.
I used this to get a Start Menu back and disable boot to Start Screen before I upgraded to Windows 8.1.
Switched from 7 to Windows 8.1 with classic start, got 3 blue screens at startup in a row this morning, starting to regret my decision a little.
I switched to 8.1 and use start8 for a start menu. Windows 8.1 is really really nice except for MetroUI. If M$ had just left the startmenu and allowed users to easily disable metroUI and Metro apps from the start it would have been a slam dunk.
