MechWarrior - Living Legends 0.7.0 released, dev team disbanded

MECHWARRIOR LIVING LEGENDS, has released their final update, 0.7.0. As of today, no more development will continue due to legal threats by the current MechWarrior IP rights holders, the MechWarrior Online team, Piranha Games. The development team for MWLL, Wandering Samurai, has been disbanded.

MWLL won the 2009 ModDB Mod of the Year (and multiplayer mod of the year), 2010 and 2011 ModDB Honorable Mention, and were in the top 5 2007 and 2008 Most Anticipated Mod(s).

There is a bit of good news, in addition to the release of 0.7.0 - MechWarrior Living Legends should be compatible with the free Crysis Wars demo. Some servers will allow demo players, but some will not allow them to join. So this means you can download the Crysis Wars trial/demo, and play MWLL online for free on those servers

Why not just slap a new name on it change some designs and call it a spiritual successor like everyone else who has a hard on for a franchise the ip rightholder doesn’t give a shit about?

^ There’s more to it than just that, they’re using the existing material built in the previous titles. They’d practically have to create their own universe, etc. for them to legally pursue their mod any further.

I saw this on Facebook, it’s unfortunate, the mod had/has a lot of potential (even played it for a while, it’s pretty fucking fun) really hope some people pick back up the reigns and do bug fixes, etc.

They can’t pick up the reigns, they could get sued. :frowning:

Actually, they will be doing a couple more hotfixes to work out the remaining 0.7.0 kinks, apparently they are allowed to do that, but no more huge updates that add new features or anything like that.

It’s sad too, because the Mechlab was almost ready to be implemented, which would have been fantastic.

Also played some of it, it’s great. Feels so much more professional in this release, and it’s easier to get better mechs now too for late game joiners, and more fun.

I don’t think I’ll be playing MWO anymore.

Look at the homepage again. Turns out they didn’t disband due to legal issues. So someone could easily pick the project back up, I’m assuming.

That’s the message from the founders, aka the guys who started the mod, who now work at Crytek and help license out the engine to the MWO devs.

The original post described threatened legal action, but after like a day it was removed. Still, if you go to a forum other then MWLL and talk to some of the devs, they very much wanted to continue but had to come to an agreement to stop adding new features, otherwise a C&D and a complete removal of the project would have been a real possibility.

MWO at the current state isn’t that fun to play, have to add.
