I was wondering if any of you gents know how to firewall a specific application in OSX 10.4 - either with the built-in IPFW firewall, or otherwise.
A for effort, but you’ve linked to information which is specific to OSX 10.5, whereas I’m hoping some knowledgeable chap can direct me towards instructions for OSX 10.4.
In your system preferences, just search for Firewall Advanced Settings
Then Add what programs with the +/- buttons. It should pop up Finder, and direct you to all of your apps automatically.
Hope this helps!
…would screenshot, but I use 10.6 hehe…

Here you go. I hope this is what you’re looking for.

Apple doesn’t support old products. Enjoy using shitty obsolete apple software.
Drew++ thanks for your reply, however it only works like that in 10.5 and up. 10.4 doesn’t have any easily accessible per-application firewall. I know how to turn on the firewall already, i just want to make sure one specific program can not send or recieve data.
sersoft, thats considered trolling which is apparently a bannable offense around these parts, but I just felt like letting you know that I do enjoy apple software, and their support or non-support isn’t the issue - just my own lack of knowledge about how to use the software.
Just letting you know that apple doesn’t support old shitty software, I wasn’t implying that apple itself is shitty, your brain just assumed that because you probably hate apple deep inside.
Did you try turning off the internet while you’re using the program?
QFT
cough you TROLL YOU DIE cough
Yes. I’d prefer not to. The handy thing about firewalls is that they can be configured to block specific programs. Therefore I’m posting on internet forums to find out how to do this.
If you know/could find somewhere which port(s) the program in question uses, you can use ipfw which hopefully is still included in 10.4
man ipfw
or
add rule_number deny tcp from any to any port_number out
(replace rule_number and port_number with their values)
What app are you trying to firewall?
I found this on the net for blocking LimeWire… I figure it should work for something else.
Hm, so it looks like I either need to find out what port numbers need to be blocked, or acquire a firewall which can block specific programs.
Yep. Unfortunately, per-app blocking wasn’t introduced until Leopard (only per-port in Tiger). I know a lot of people swear by Little Snitch – you’ll probably want to double-check that it can do what you want to do, since it isn’t free (but the trial is).
thanks for the info, this looks like it.
edit - no seriously, you’re a hero, man.
only a true macfag would bump a thread where the OP got banned forever
…that or a bot. Damn bastards are fearless.
