Luminous Engine?

The universe is not perfect or imperfect. It just is. There’s no concrete medium for comparison.

No it doesn’t.

Yes it does. Perfection implies that there is absolutely no flaw in something, but if it has no purpose, there is nothing to be flawed.

That’s not supporting evidence, you just restated what you said before. A perfect diamond has the perfect atomic structure & no imperfections, that does not imply a purpose for said diamond.

Depends on what you understand by purpose, I see it as unavoidable result, if the diamond is perfect then it’s serving its purpose of being pretty and shiny and quasi-indestructible. And if it’s imperfect then it’s not even a diamond. If you see purpose as “meaning” then it’s all about what we make of it. A diamond can be used as a wedding gift or to drill for oil.

This whole argument is so ambiguous that I can’t even begin to imagine who might be closer to being right, including myself.

I think the universe is perfect because everything had to be set up exactly like this in order to exist, if one variable was off, our planet might have never even formed, let alone stabilized for long enough for a climate that supports life.

You just said that if something exists, it’s fulfilling it’s purpose simply by existing. That’s begging the question. I’m not talking about a diamond that has been mined & cut to be used, just a rock sitting in nature.

Every diamond contains impurities, other atoms that break-up a diamond’s crystal lattice. A perfect diamond could possibly exist but it’s highly, highly improbable.

So this is a thread about Diamonds and purpose now? k…

imperfect != impure.

A diamond with impurities is not an “imperfect” diamond, at least not in the same sense that can be applied to the overarching argument.

We’re creating a purpose for the diamond by giving it standards by which it can be judged as perfect. For the atoms in a diamond, we apply the creation of the diamond as the purpose, and thus perfection can be achieved.

Having a definition doesn’t give something a purpose, it’s just a means of categorization. Forming a diamond isn’t a purpose in & of itself.

wtf… well. might as well join. Perfection is the enemy of good.

what the fuck are we doing here

it’s already been established that the original engine demo is bullshit and not that exciting, let them have some fun. The original topic is no longer important, what’s wrong with brightening it up with a lil bull session?

That’s not brightening it up with all.

Someone posted an uninteresting tech demo so we decided there was little to discuss and went off on a tangent. It happens a lot.

We’re giving it more than a definition by calling it perfect, we’re giving it given goal it has achieved.

It’s easier to think of an imperfect diamond here. What we are saying is that those molecules aren’t aligned well enough to achieve a perfect diamond. We’ve given them the goal of achieving perfect alignment, making that its purpose.

Perfection implies an ideal, a standard of judgment that leaves no room for error. If you say the universe is perfect, then you are saying that the entirety of what the universe is has no error, thus the existence of the universe is its own ideal. But that’s kinda circular. So I think perfection is ultimately arbitrary to the relative standard that you use.

And all of this happened because I related Luminous Engine to the real world.
Yes, blame me.
Or blame sersoft.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
