Low res skyboxes

does it bother anyone when a game looks awesome, but the sky boxes suck?

i was looking at the COD series in particular, it totally ruins the immersion.

whats weird, is that some of the skyboxes from COD 2 trump COD 4 & MW2.

Low res sky boxes are painfully annoying. I know with the CoD series all of the world textures have always been a bit crappy. For example, the geometry textures may look fantastic at first glance in CoD4 with all the specular and normal mapping, but when you get closer to take a look (even on ultra quality) you realize they’re just pixelated crap. It’s probably a side effect of it being a console port.

Most of the textures are 512x512 and 256x256 (often used for the BSP) - the engine allows for the usual maps (diffuse, normal, specular etc.)
CoD is a fast-paced game, you are always on the move thus highly detailed textures would be a waste of resources.
The engines limitations are very tight when it comes to materials and such.

The MW2 skybox mountains - one is pretty damn HQ in my computer. And ia m running low settings - jsut textures high. And my pc is quite old.

Looks like you need to spend more time playing the game and less time looking at the sky.

Is this referring to the cod series? Shame on you.

Agreed.

In general COD textures are poor, especially when compared to other aspects of the game.

Just look at the hands, it seems like the developers of COD put all of the processing power in them.

The skyboxes don’t bother me as much as the jagged shadows do in COD. But I have noticed their rather low-resness…

I personally think the four or five existing skyboxes in HL2 look like shit.
