Low framerate in Starcraft II

I’ve been having some trouble with SCII. From what I’ve heard the game is not very demanding. I heard an i7 with a GTX260 can max it out with ease and my rig’s faster than that.

But I’ve been experiencing some terrible framerates every now and then.
It’s not always, but in certain missions on certain spots. For example, in the mission where you have to infiltrate the prison planet with Tosh, my framerate went down to 11FPS at a point.

Specs:
i7 920, standard clock
4gb 1600mhz ddr3 memory
Club3D 4870X2 2048mb
Gigabyte EX-58 UD3R
WD Caviar Black 640gb
Windows 7 64bit

I have SC II running maxed out at 1680x1050. It also automatically put everything on ultra, so I assume my rig should be easily capable of playing it at max.

Anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

Maybe overheating? Check your computer (including heatsink) for dust.

Nah that ain’t it, I recently did that and I often check the temperatures, they’re well within normal bounds. Plus, I’ve seen it overheat before and the screen flickers when that happens and artefacts appear along with frequent framedrops.

Perhaps the game just isn’t optimised at certain points? :frowning:

Have there been any other reportings on the internets?

Maybe those instances where you lag are just demanding parts of the game. In that case, the only solution is turning down the graphics. Other than that, I can’t help you :frowning:

His PC clearly walks all over this game. It has to boil down to bad optimisation or some sort of memory fluctuation with a background application?

When it starts lagging, does it stay or does it go away if you move away from certain areas?

If it stays then it’s possible your GPU switched to 2d mode which will cause massive performance loss, it’s a fucking annoying glitch from NVIDIA that happens every now and then.

His card is an ATI.

ATI’s have a 2d mode as well I think, not sure if that specific glitch is present though.

If you go to the SC2 forums, you’ll see many people with the same problems. The game is RIDICULOUSLY unoptimized. It’s not your rig thats messin up.

Makes the most sense I guess. I usually have a good frame rate, but at some points in some campaigns it just drops. And the one with Tosh was a planet with a lot of lava, so plenty of particles and what not + constantly moving searchlights etc. I guess this could just have brought a real heavy load all of a sudden?

Well, it seems like there’s not much I can do then. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Does it start of with a good Framerate, then slowly degrades? Have you had this problem with other games?
