holy shit, really? i stopped watching halfway through season 4. when was time travel introduced. thats utterly retarded and makes me sad in my pants.
I have no idea when it was introduced. It gets better, though: my ex actually told me that “the time travel is really well done and convincing.” IT’S FUCKING TIME TRAVEL BITCH. As a general rule, unless time travel was the original premise of your story, adding it in later is just a horrible, horrible crutch that you’re misusing in the hopes of propping up your story.
Actually, it was really well done and made things worse for everyone rather than fixing loose ends but hey whatever I’m sure you’re ex is retarded.
The general concept in LOST is that there are no solid rules in its universe; it is based on a very loose framework of rules. Everything (or almost anything) can be ultimately explained to be or be governed by rules entirely different from what we assumed or were led to believe.
It also is a huge bet from the creator’s side: A show that hooks the viewer by constantly creating mysteries which are never really explained, with the promise that in a 6 season story arc all is planned through and will eventually be resolved. I believe that after LOST we won’t see another similar series making the same success for a long time, 'cause I don’t really expect people to willingly go through such a long term commitment of suspending disbelief.
Anyway, for me, as a series it had an excellent first season, a good start in the second season that ended horribly bad, and a boring start in the third season that picked up after its first half. Fourth season was ok and the fifth season had its ups and downs. I’m mostly watching now because with just one season left, I want to know what the resolution will be.
Although… judging from the “last supper” promo pic, which was also done in Battlestar Gallactica, I’d say that in the final season we will see a lot of “a wizard/god did it” explanations.
Time travel is well (safely) done -mainly in the 5th season, and it’s basically the same deal with the Twelve Monkeys movie. But then, there is also that “consciousness travel” and the “special” people and the whole debate if “whatever happened happend” or “you can change the future” and everything gets complicated.
Last, I think I remember the creators mentioning something along the lines “we won’t be explaining every mystery in the series (numbers, time travel mechanics) because there are dumb people watching and they would be bored”. Obviously they didn’t say “dumb people” but that was the gist of it.
Glad to see I’m not the only one who still likes Lost. Pretty annoying that it takes a year for a new season to come out every time though.
time travel had been toyed with a few times before season 4, take season 3 in the simply brillant, flashes before your eyes. In season 4 the constant, was praised by many as one of the best television episodes ever, I challenge anyone not to water up at its conclusion. Lost is daring, it’s not afraid to run off in a different direction, or try new things, the time travel served a purpose it filled a lot of the history in, in a unquie and intresting way (My personal highlight was finally getting to see the Frenchies arrival on island). I also liked how Lost managed to create rules and stick to them, and all the time not create any paradoxes, whatever happened happened, throw a few pebbles in the river it doesn’t change course. But time travel is now dead, the writers have said that season 6 is going back to a more linear way of story telling. And I think Lost did something not many shows can do, it changes it “style” so to speak nearly every season and the majority of the time, its win win. If you can believe an island has a monster made of smoke, hatches that could end the world and all these people surriving such a horrific crash with minor cuts and bruises, how can you not believe the time travel?
And for the record I hear quiite a bit of critcal bashing for season 4, but season 4 personally was the strongest season lost had since its first.
Saying “why can’t you believe in this if you believe in this” is a pretty useless thing. It’s called suspension of disbelief, and it only goes so far.
Also, I accept your challenge. Give me the name of the episode and I’ll see if I bawl.
The more you try to hype it up, the more I am glad i don’t watch it.
Season 4 Episode 5 - The Constant
Background info-
(Spoiler warning) Desmond sailed around the world in a boat race to prove to Pennys father his love for her, but crashed and got stranded on the island for three years. The freighter he is now heading to he was told from a dying friend, was “not pennys boat”, despite them initatlly saying that they where. The frieghter folks intentions at this point have not been revealed, as in are they there to save the Losties or to kick the crap out of 'em, two scientists from off the boat are on the island, the ginger and the nutter
the suspension of “belief” regarding time travel, when you consider already what the island, can do, has done, and what happened in the four seasons leading up to it, its not hard to believe it can also time travel. Besides like I said it was a bold move by the writers, they knew it, and even thanked those who stuck with it, but thats what sets lost apart from the pack, its ability to reinvent itself where others would fear to and time travel if you watch, despite bamboozling at first, makes sense in the overall arc of the story
(spoiler warning for season 5)
well if you actually watched it you might think differntly. It’s a very unquie the way they did it, its not like they can decide or have any control over it, it’s chatotic, random and deadly. I thought the ground rules they set up was very clever as well, the island is like a record skipping on a needle, whatever happens happens, it was always that way, you are just pebbles in a stream its only if you can find a “variable”, a boulder to change the course of the stream, which is almost impossible, can you change it. One even went to the extremes of shooting a kid but that was always meant to happen, it only made the kid who he was in the end. And time travel has always sort of been in Lost, the island has always been out of synch with the rest of the world, and they began to explore that deeper early on in season 3
LOST is cool, can’t wait for it’s last season.
It’s unfortunate that so many people watched season two then quit, without watching the first one and going “THIS MAKES NO SENSE”.
But hey, your loss.
Not really.
No, we saw through season 1 and 2, then quite because it started getting incredibly lame and boring.
But I wasn’t trying to hype it up. I don’t even consider myself a fan anymore, and I would not recommend the series to anyone I know -not that it needs recommendations though, people seem to fall into it like flies in syrup.
season 2 wasnt great but it wasnt terrible neither (The Michael shocker before the end of the season, is to this day one of TV’s most shocking momments, theres no denying that), the problem was the writers didnt know how long they had to tell this story, but come season 3, they sorted that problem out, they had an end date in mind and so could pick up the pace, start revealing things, and moving the story towards that end. And it got better and better, the end of season 3 was spectacular, and the second half answered a lot and ended a lot of arcs (Why was Locke in a wheelchair?, would sawyer ever deliver that letter), then season 4 reinvented the formula and then season 5 threw the rules in the air, for those who’ve stuck with it, they have been rewarded again and again, and I do feel sorry for anyone that couldnt give the show the time it deserved during season 2, they’ve missed out on the brillant benjamin linus, patchy, keamey, phil and jacob just to name but a few things
and anyone moaning about season 5, theres no denying, this place is death, dead is dead and the incident wasnt top telly. I still get shivers, par the poor CGI, by Ben being judged by Smokey. And not forgetting when hurley threw a taco at ben and when sayid droped that guy into that knife ouch
Then why are you posting in a LOST fan thread? Trolls.
Go watch Wife Swap or something.
At least Wife Swap would have better writing, and it’s spontaneous.
that is blasphemy, lost is the best writen scifi drama on tv today, fact, if you don’t believe me, watch it from start to finish, and then tell me otherwise
or alt watch my top five momments
Charlies Scrafice
Des and Penny
Poor Swayer
Crazy Michael
Alex
Feel free to post up your top 5’s
I’m not going to waste my time doing that.
Wait, sci-fi drama? What’s sci-fi about it? It’s all mystery and no explanation, that’s about as far away as you can get from sci-fi.
there is plenty of explantion, alot of story arcs have come to an end and as a result alot of charchter development has happened, only the bigger questions remain and its “sci-fi” because it has elements of fantasy in it, like demi-gods, anicent monsters, and a hell of a lot of science based theories that are explored through out
Then it’s fantasy, not sci-fi.
