Loss of Interest in BM?

Well actually it was known in Q1 that they wouldn’t make 09. Nobody was willing to believe it and they tried to blag their way through it. They pushed for it, but as the deadline approached, it dawned on them that they would not make the deadline and they’d have to make the announcement no developer wants to make.

“We won’t be able to release on schedule.”

Right now they’ve got an internal schedule which is realistic and they’re sticking to it. So far, they are on schedule. Or so they say; but if you don’t believe them then why are you here in the first place?

A question to the devs, to which I think I already know the answer, but I can’t state it as fact without a confirmation.

Does the internal development schedule, if met, foresee an end to planned development within this year?
Note: This is not a release date, as there are plenty things which just can’t be planned for, no matter how hard you try. Whilst this may imply a release in this year, it could just as easily mean release by the end of Q2 of next year.

fail post, sorry

sig’d for countdown

Shouldn’t that be d-minus?

 oh lawd!

My question to the developers would be ‘How could you possibly claim you’d be ready to release at the end of 2009, when it has been months and the mod is still unfinished?’ Unless somebody either on the team, or the team as a whole was lying about progress, then surely the mod would be finished by now?

Just been asked a few hours ago in another thread. And countless times prior to that.

Either… They wound up polishing more than they thought they would be able to…
or… They ran into unexpected trouble (bound to happen in anything this large)…
or… They (HEAVEN FORBID!) have lives and something in those lives (like, oh, making a living, shopping, eating, sleeping, family matters, etc)…

In the end, it comes down to this: It will be done, when it is done, and as far as I’m concerned, the longer they keep it in development, the better it will be when it’s out (assuming it’s out before Episode 3, although this year would be more preferable. August 30th would be best (HIGH SPEED INTERWEBZ FTW! 78 megabits woot)).

They set the release date at the end of 2008. At the time they would have aimed to have it done around Q4 of 2009 at which stage they realised that there was still too much to be done and that it wouldn’t be worth rushing it.

i thought this was a banned question? anyways, its not stale here, the die hard people are still here, and the less die hard like me just lurk

Gray, why did you post this here and on the VDC? There is absolutely no reason to do that.

I think the reason there is no media is because they are working on xen, which they said they weren’t giving media for.

…or maybe i’m just being a optimist.

Because they wanted to annoy you. Everyone knows the mod is finished, and it has been finished for almost a year now, but they were like “on you know those guys that don’t believe in the mod? Let’s make them pay by making them wait much longer!” It’s a conspiracy. It’s like when God thinks you don’t believe in him, and then he puts you through all these tests just to piss you off. Well it’s very similar. All of us believers have already played the mod countless times since the release, we just haven’t told anyone. It’s pretty awesome, especially the part when you first see the Gargantua…

Game modders are simply inherently lazy, that’s the truth of it.

That’s why they’re modders and not game makers.

Compare the achievements of this mod in the past 6 years to the achievements of the entire open source community who also don’t get paid and do it in their free time. Yet, they seem to actually get results. And it’s not beacuse “there’s more of them”, it’s beacuse they treat it as though it’s important.

Waiting longer doesn’t mean we’ll get a better game. It just means a longer wait, and probably another sign of lazy game modding, which is certainly not a good thing, and possibly means a worse game.

This is why we have 101 million source mods that haven’t even made it out of beta. Modders are like that - they just don’t really care that their work is unfinished.

Wow, you really are a dick, aren’t you? Most of the developers of this mod are professional game developers doing this in their spare time. They aren’t being lazy in the slightest. Take a look at Ram’s Steam profile, just as an example:

https://steamcommunity.com/id/raminator/

See where it says Source SDK 78.4 hours in the last two weeks? Yeah, that’s not being lazy. And bear in mind that only counts the tools that are in the SDK. I’m sure if you did the same for the rest of the developers you’d see a similar pattern.

Hey, I’m just talking about modders in general. Obviously there are exceptions, and I’m very happy that you’ve shown me such an exception in this very team. I didn’t know there were pro developers in this team, thanks for the factoid.

From what I’ve seen in the number of mods I’ve followed that either died, or were abandoned after a beta release because they couldn’t be bothered to finish the thing off, I’ve basically gathered that a large proportion of modders aren’t particularly bothered about their projects and many of them never get off the ground. I mean thousands and thousands of sourcemods have been started over the years and never finished.

I’ve never met the BM modding team, so I can’t say what they are or aren’t doing, and I won’t try to say for certain. This is just me explaining why I’m not surprised that this mod is taking a long time, because I’ve seen it all over the internet from other projects that took a long time and may or may not have been completed. It’s called “applying a general rule to a specific situation” - something done quite a lot in maths, I think you’ll find. And remember to take note of when somebody says “probably” or “possibly” - you may want to look these words up if you’re unsure.

Also - people like you are why youtube comments are so unbearable. You jump at the first chance to start insulting people. Try to be a bit more civil.

Really.

Neon perhaps you should go back and re-read your post. In a black mesa forums, in a thread that is discussing the lack of interest, regarding the most recent postings about why it is late, you say modders are lazy.

If that isnt flame bait, I have monkeys flying out my backside.

I dunno, i mainly visit here for the discussion that has nothing to do with black mesa, for the community; since everything that has to do with black mesa has been discussed to death.

Nothing else to do but wait

Being lazy doesn’t have to be an insult. I didn’t say anywhere that being lazy was a bad thing, I merely placed it as a logical conclusion to observation. I openly admit I’m personally extremely lazy, a lot of people I hang around with are too. If I were involved in Black Mesa I’d have given up out of laziness years ago, I certainly wouldn’t have the dedication to see a project through to the end, or go as far as you lot have here. For that I applaud you. I apologise if you saw the “modders are generally lazy” thing as an insult, it wasn’t meant that way. Merely an observation. And as Mr Flatline so kindly pointed out, one that clearly doesn’t apply here.

However that doesn’t change the observation - have a look a million other “in progress” game mods and you’ll see a lot of extremely lazy people behind the works. It’s in the very nature of making a game mod as opposed to a whole new game. You can’t really deny that. But I apologise for making the assumption that all members of this mod team are in the same boat, clearly some of them are not.

I’d say that none of them are. Those that were have either left or have been booted for that very reason.

Correct actually. There were folks booted as a result of not regularly turning stuff in.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
