Just ran steam today to play L4D2 and everything but my games, my media and tools works. When I click on one of them it says checking for steam games updates or media updates or tools updates and sits there forever. This happened after L4D2 was released and I had it pre-loaded so I am guessing it is the problem.
What should I do?
Just leave it, trust me it should be fine after a while.

Same thing happened to me. Just let it sit for like 30 minutes, eventually a pop-up will come up that says “L4D2 has finished downloading” or some shit.
Try starting steam in off-line mode, then try deleting your local game content (for L4D2) if that doesn’t completely sort it.
Just fucking great. I’ve been wanting to play some L4D1 or Counterstrike today, and now Steam won’t work. I’ve been left clicking for five minutes and I get the “Steam is already running. You many only use one copy of Steam at a time.” What do I do?!
open taskmgr and close steam.exe

Your impatience broke steam and as a result all your games are deleted kthxbye.
This happens with me a lot, just alt+ctrl+del and go to processes then find steam.exe and hit end process. And ignore Mangled.
BTW, I waited and L4D2 worked. Amazing game.

I just deleted 2 files out of my steamapps folder, let steam search them again and I was fine
