Because Bush wasted all our time overthrowing Iraq, so we didn’t really focus on Afghanistan.

Because if you invade a country and establish a government that can’t function without your help you don’t just bail and leave that government to be buttfucked by dozens of local and angry armed dudes.

Not really. The Revolution was, to all outside observers, completely unexpected. Furthermore, nobody actually knew what the alignment the new government would take; that lack of knowledge rapidly disappeared when they signed a non-aggression pact with the Soviets, but the revolution wasn’t a coup.
The government before that, I believe, was some form of monarchy. Will have to look that up though.
On the nose. Most of the troops were in Iraq, rather than Afghanistan, meaning that while Iraq was surging with troops, Afghanistan really didn’t have any. That, coupled with a horrific counterinsurgency operation, meant that virtually no progress was made.
The military-industrial complex thinks otherwise about that.

1929–1973: Monarchy
1973-1978: Non-violent (indigenous) coup instituting a Republic
1978: Military coup carried out by the Russian-“supported” Afghan communist party and Russian-armed military force.
1979: Russian occupation begins in response to indigenous (and America-supported) resistance to the coup government.
I lol’d when I found out that Russia invaded only 1 year after their puppet government was installed. I definitely called this one correctly.

Because now the focus IS on Afghanistan so the apparent solution is to send in more troops to defend a government that has no popular support and won’t survive unless it becomes a miltaristic totalitarian regime.

I have not read all of this this thread and it is freakin’ long, so I will not do that! But if I see anyone think our (Norwegian ones too) troops are in there to fight terrorism, I will know that that person is manipulated by the American government!
