ITT: Siggs PC planning

So, here we are again. I bet this thread looks familiar already, but… Anyway :stuck_out_tongue: [COLOR=‘Red’]The very top of my budget is £450 ($700usd)

Case: Casecom 6788 Black Mid Tower, 120mm Blue Front Fan – £26 ($40usd)
Psu: 750W Powercool 80+ Dual 12v Rail V2.2 High Efficiency – £47 ($74usd)
Motherboard: ?
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 4 x 2.33Ghz – £104 (£163usd)
Ram: Kingston 2gb (2x1gb) Ddr2 1066mhz – £25 ($40usd)
Gpu: XFX HD4850 1Gb – £76 ($120usd)
Hdd: 750Gb Seagate Barracuda – £59 ($92usd)
DVD drive: Samsung 20x dvd-rw – £9 ($15usd)

[COLOR=‘Red’]Total (-mobo) = £346 ($543usd)

A few things;

1– Graphics card wise, I also saw this just now, is it worth halving the memory and getting a HD5000 card? I’d say no, but it’s worth asking.

2– Yes, yes, I know using a quad is old hardware, but I’m on a very tight budget, so overclocking and cheap future upgrades are important.

3– Yes, YES :hmph:. I know there’s not much ram, but that’s an easy place to save money, because more can always be added. These past 2 points are obvious things people will point out, but I’m not completely blind or stupid, there are reasons.

4– I do need some help picking a motherboard, they have me completely baffled. It’d have to be fairly durable and have features if everything attatched to it will be OC’d at some point, but again, price wise, I don’t wanna stray over about £65 ($102usd)

Naturally, advice is welcomed
.

Since when is a quad-core cpu old???

Well, that model is fairly old. :stuck_out_tongue:
.

I recommend replacing the 4850 with a 4870. The difference is actually noticable.

can’t find a 4870 for anything under £95 :S
.

Double your RAM, 2gb doesn’t cut the mustard anymore. You should be going for at least 3gb.

Remember, a 32bit OS can only access 3.5gb RAM, a 64 bit OS can access much more… But with Vista or Win 7 you effectively lose 512 mb of that to running the OS itself.

I’ll manage for the time being. :expressionless:

This I know.

GPU wise, I’ve decided to stick with the 1Gb 4850

I think what I should have said, is that can anyone suggest any better parts, or bscly, better performance, for similar/the same money? Someone on another forum has already scoped out the next quad up for the same price, which is great.
.

certain AMD phenom 2x2’s are actually 2x4’s with half of the processors locked. You can unlock them in the system bios and end up with a phenom 2x4 for $99 us. google it.

How about an ati 5770?

Plus you get teh dee ecks eleven ololol

oh em gee sersoftz lern2read opening post. £££

I want to know where you’re finding stuff this cheap. All the websites I’ve seen have hardware that’s way more expensive.

Mostly UK stores.

I didn’t say you should buy the card. If you’re going cheap, why not go free?

Haha, ok then, steal one, and get back to me. :stuck_out_tongue:

As for a motherboard, this one has been suggested. It’s abit more than what I wanted to spend tho. Decent, y/n?

ASUS makes great boards for overclocking.

I too need to buy a new motherboard. I made a thread about it, but it died before I got any answers.

This. Every person I’ve ever asked says that ASUS makes awesome mobos.

I’m sorry to say this, but my pc is 2.5 years old atm and it still beats that.

Most of my parts are over 2 years old as well and my PC sure as hell beats that.

Except the CPU, but only at stock, 2.98ghz stable with speedstep disabled FTW.

Also, sorry siggs but I only steal cards for myself, and my local best-buy only has shitty cards on display so I won’t bother until they get the 5870…

I’m sorry that you feel the need to wave your e-penis in here like a dickhead, instead of being helpful  Your PC cost a fair bit more, I’m willing to bet yes?

Anyway, I’ve decided on the AMD phenom x2 550 Black Edition, it’s cheaper than the Q8200 anyway, by quite alot  But this would mean AM3, and more expensive ram? :open_mouth:
