I have a website to help you guys get all this video card confusion sorted out.

The model number of the card really doesn’t mean crap. Many recently made cards like the nVidia 9400 GT PCIe are no better than this 3 year old nVidia 8400gs 512mb PCI (yes… PCI, not PCI-Express) card I have laying around in an old P4 desktop. Actually, the far older 8400gs has TWICE the texture fill rate as well as raw calculations. Oddly enough, both cards have identical shaders, texture units, and raster operations. Memory, CPU clock speed, and shader clocks are identical.

Long story short, the 9400 GT is the same GPU design made at a cheaper to manufacture die process. It’s all about deceptive marketing.

If you go with an ATi card, make sure you get something faster than an HD4650 if you want it to outperform the “old school” nVidia 8800GT.
