iPad

Well, Stephen Fry wrote down his thoughts on the device (tested it first hand at the event as well) here: https://www.stephenfry.com/2010/01/28/ipad-about/. And I agree with pretty much everything he’s said.

I for one wouldn’t call it garbage. Like I said before, Apple set a standard in a market niche. A market niche that other companies already dared to venture in but didn’t have the balls to set standards for, looking at companies like HP here. Apple now showed the world that the market exists and that there’s a big player entered the game. Other companies -will- follow, other companies -will- try to surpass Apple’s standard, Apple -will- keep improving it, just like they did with the iPod and the iPhone.

It does lack things like multitasking and flash (amongst others), but that doesn’t mean it won’t find its audience. People that are looking for a cheap laptop/netbook so they can do multitasking, won’t find their hail in the iPad. But there’s people that just want a central device that offers a big enough screen to read books on, watch movies on, work on and surf the web on, simple tasks that don’t really -require- multitasking, … Those people will lean towards the iPad (which is cheap, no matter how you turn it).

On top of that, the SDK already revealed some “secrets” about the future of the iPad, giving us hints at what the device is capable of (for example: VOIP has been found in the SDK). This first version might look like it’s limited, but once it starts off, once other players in the market will start competing, then we’ll see what the iPad is capable of. It might be disappointing, it might not be, nobody knows for sure right now. But I wouldn’t write it off just now. This has potential, and now it’s down to Apple to make sure that the device lives up to its potential.

Personally, I’m waiting to see/test the device whether it can fill my needs for on-the-road entertainment through art, movies or books (especially the possibilities in terms of art speak to me. the iPhone app that allows you paint small things is already brilliant enough for me, too bad I cba to get an iPhone for just that).

how aboot a fucken usb port

Well, it has a dock connector to USB. Unless you actually want an USB port to connect a mobile device to a mobile device (might even be possible with the dock connector, not sure). Though it has wi-fi and Bluetooth, so in theory, a USB connection between two mobile devices isn’t really “needed”.

I just don’t know what this’ll be used for…If it has a stylus then people could use it for graphical design, but I really can’t see where this particular product’s niche is…

Exactly! It serves no niche, it doesn’t fit into any of them. (lawlpun)

I love the way that in the 3 video demos that I watched, the only vaguely new feature that was introduced was the new photos menu…which is…just a menu. It’s no better than the iTouches photo section. Everything covoered by the technicians and Jobs were iPod Touch features.

Maybe I’m missing something, but if I went up there and spewed the exact same stuff I did for the iPod like 2/3 years ago, I’d feel like a fool.
.

Woah cool man. Didnt know it existed. Sweetness.

Just discovered this company…

The cheapest netbooks are around $300 here. There is almost no incentive to get this thing over a small laptop.

Touch screens are cool.

Does that justify a $300 - $500 price difference?

OMG HATERZ OLOLOL

Grow up and get a fucking life.
Just name me at least one more company that pushes multi-touch into a mass market.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking of getting an iTouch myself.

well they do kind of have a lot of the patents

i dont know what people are complaing about it, its like a laptop with no keyboard and a simple interface, and that screen? if you can watch videos on it, it could be the ultimate portable video player, I got an archos at the mo, but compared to this its dwarfed. Imagine slapping this bad boy into your car for your kids. And for gaming? I’m excited at what some people will make for it. It fits a gap (between having a laptop and a iphone) nicely. not forgetting it should be sweet for reading books too

And for those who hate apple, I dread to think what you think of Windows, whos platform and products as of late are bargain basement at best (Apart from windows 7)

Great, yet another useless Apple iProduct :meh:

that’s the point.

They are only defining a trend by releasing iPad.
In 5 years time, everybody will use that type of shit, except for a few whining 15-year old geeks who post on gamerz forums. And more than half of those products will have an Apple badge on the back, whether you like it or not.

i dont really care about that but i def reckon there is a time and a place for an interface w/ some tactile feedback

It seems the launch price will be $500, which honestly isn’t that bad. But, the restrictions Apple imposes on its products makes me want a netbook instead.

I would hardly say that is a slam dunk. I don’t think there is enough of a market for a device like this to say that everyone will want or need one. I don’t see myself or ‘everyone’ carrying around a device like this. I don’t see the need for something like this making it a staple of home, driving, or office environment. What I think is that it will appeal to a few interested parties, and Apple gadget enthusiasts. Fortunately for apple, even if the device sells completely from within its devout followers it will be successful enough.

As hardware gets more powerful for the size I think future variants may prove to be more widespread. But I don’t think this device is going to expand the borders of the apple fan base much, if at all.
