Hubicorn Needs PC Help >:0

Hello my lovely Unicorn lovers.

I am in dire need for some help. Whoever helps me come to a solution I shall gift them one free game of their choice on steam and grant them a cool forum title.

Here’s the situation:

I just got around to building a new computer. it’s up and running but it randomly turns off. The temps seem fine as well as the power supply. Should the CPU be preforming at 70c+ when it’s idle and 80c when playing a video game? Playing a game does not cause it to randomly shut off. It just does. It will shut down no matter what I am currently doing, even including playing video games. It would even just randomly shut off while watching a SD video or being idle on the desktop. Sometimes it can last for a hour before turning off. The CPU is currently being cooled down with the intel stock heatsink fan. Good? Bad? Could be a heating issue, could be bad memory. I have no idea.

Other Facts:
Clean Install of Windows 7
Chipset Drivers Installed (Latest)
Bios Updated (Latest)
No Blue Screen When Turning Off
Checked Bios for “turn off when overheating” feature and does not have it. Can someone confirm?
No OverClocking…Yet at least

Solutions Tired:
None Yet.

Again I thank you all for putting your heads together. Means a lot to me.

Much Love,
Hubi

i dunno man

Since your computer does not shut off while playing games, that probably means it’s not a heat problem. For the SD Video that you mentioned though, have you checked any recent hardware you’ve installed?

Check your computer for viruses also.

It is a clean install of Windows 7. It just randomly shuts off. It could just even be idle on the desktop and yet sometimes it goes on for hours.

What about swapping your hardware with a friend to test if some parts are faulty?

and when shutting off, no error message or bluescreen appears, it just turns off?
and btw, your temps seem pretty high.
I had a similar problem with my old mainboard sometimes, when the chipset had too high temps

Would love to pin point which one if anything. I kinda have a feeling of over heating. then again have a feeling it’s a memory stick issue.

Check both then?

have you done a memtest already?

Did not try a memory test yet and no blue screen when shutting off.

(updated main post)

Your CPU temperatures look pretty high (although it may be normal for i7 processors?)
If you have another PSU at hand (preferably one with at least 700W) you could try switch them out and see if it removes the shut downs. I’ve also seen similar issue with some computers and after long fiddling around we determined the Power Supply was the cause.
Modern Mainboards have “automatic shut down” aswell for the case the Processor gets too hot. You might look into your BIOS to see if there’s an option to set the Max higher or disable it.

I think his PSU is good enough, but worth a try though, maybe it’s a faulty PSU which is very unstable.
but that with CPU temperature could be the problem, as I mentioned before, those temps are pretty high.
EDIT: Did you check the temps of you Chipset?

The temps are almost at 60c.

Did you apply the thermal paste on the cpu before installing the heatsink? Is the heatsink properly installed?

Just to check, you do have fans mounted in those 2 120mm fan slots in the case right?

The intel heat sink had paste on it already. just placed it on and snapped it in. It could be that crappy heat sink but then again the vast majority of people in the world will be running stock cooling. but it might just be that.

Yep, there are fans

hm, do you have the stock timings, clock and volts set for your RAM?
When I set different timings for my RAM and didn’t raise the volts my PC was unstable too

The first thing I would swap out would definitely be the PSU.

At the current moment I am 90% sure the problem is with the PSU. Swap it out with another one that can support your PC, keep it on for a while, and then let us know if it still crashes.

EDIT: Past experience from several situations exactly like yours

hm, I know that such situations can be caused by the PSU, but only when the PSU needs to deliver more power, e.g. when playing games and the GFX card needs more power.
I need a new PSU, mine gets really hot when playing games, since I put my new GFX card into my PC.

Its not just because it needs to deliver more power, since in the several times I’ve had that problem the PSUs all worked for months (or years) perfectly fine with no hardware changes, and then start crashing the computer randomly.

I can’t say I know exactly why that happens, since I’m not up to date on the internal structure of the PSU, but in all of my cases the PSU was the only cause of the problem.
