Personally, I found Black Mesa when reading up about hacking techniques (I’m just interested for you troll’s out there). I saw that someone had hacked the Black Mesa website in an attempt to get some attention. I searched up Black Mesa, took a look and liked it. Then proceeding to forget about it for a year or so. I found it again in late 2007, and here I am.

I was searching for the Half-Life HD pack and I came across this while searching.
PCZone magazine had a feature after one of the earlier media releases.
I found Black Mesa as I thought about a remake of HL and then I found with google ModDB and with ModDB I found BM.

I believe it was wikipedia. One nostalgic moment lead to me googling HL and reading all aboudit on the wiki, then finding the ‘Half-Life Source has been criticized for not fully utilizing many of the features of the Source engine found in Half-Life 2, as it still uses textures and models from the original game. Due to this, a third-party mod remake called Black Mesa is also under development.’ bit, followed the link, looked at the media and said ‘wow’.
