How would YOU release Black Mesa?

I would release BM in 1Mb lots each day.

Nah dude, go the viral route, release it byte by byte, encrypted in RSA and encoded within random images on the web, with the key representing the first 256 bytes and the exponent representing the last 16 bytes. Make the fans really EARN the thing.

I like this idea. Also find the cheapest webhost with really crappy servers.

I’ll bring the gasoline :retard:

One, two, three, four, five, six… :brow:

Torrent is the best way to go. Specially for BM, because it is free and will be downloaded in the release day by a lot of people. After a couple of hours the download will probably get really fast, as it happens with popular torrents. You only get problems in speed with not so popular torrents.

In any case, even if the BM dev team do not provide a torrent for download, someone will eventually create a torrent file and start distributing it. It would not be very good for the first peers trying to download it, though.

Get the Mininova CDN to host it.

Silly! Every REAL valve fan KNOWS that Gabe checks under his seat cushions for left-over chips before he sits!

Maybe that was the point.

I would walk into Valve HQ, demand to see Gabe, shake his hand, thank him, get his autograph, put the disk down on his desk, and walk away.

I’d give it to Fong, let him handle the distribution :expressionless:

Fong is a cool guy, eh breaks a disc and doesn’t afraid of of rage

Give it the usual big speech and release thing on the front page and release on an unlimited number of DVDs for the masses to collect. From the centre of CERN.

Hide it in a WoW Addon.

Along with a RickRoll.

Don’t mention WoW to me, I just spent the last three weeks playing WoW for the first time. I’ve got a burnout as far as that game goes, it’s nothing but grinding. You grind your way from level 1 to level 80.

There is no story or depth whatsoever, no different options for finishing quests. Just cookie-cutter go fetch this or slay this many monsters.

I’m done with WoW, tried it and it fell short. I’m still considering The Old Republic since at least it’ll have some story and better quests, that and the fact that I’m a huge Star Wars fan :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry, just had to get that of my chest :expressionless:

A game’s story should be contained within the game, not in a bunch of cash-in books and ancillary online supplements.

I know that there’s a lot of story to the Warcraft universe, it’s just a shame that it’s not brought to expression in World of Warcraft :expressionless:

I would team up with the scientist slaughterhouse team (with promises to make a sequel for doing so) and change the ending to just be the BMS website instead of an anticipated sequel ending…

Then everyone will have BMS, because EVERYONE has scientist slaughterhouse… right?.. RIGHT?

P.S. A scientist slaughterhouse sequal would be amazing.

thru my arse.

Erm… you are wrong.
What about “opening that giant gate” mega quest which everyone on the server participated in?
I’m not a WoW fan either, but they have pretty epic “historical” events thru constant updates. Even though you have to be in game at least 3 hours a day to see everything.
This is why WoW is so degrading. Unless you play it forever, you won’t have fun.

So… Did you do anything at 80 or did you think the game was finished?

True, the standard levelling quests (go to x and kill a bunch of y’s) don’t involve much story. The story is in raids, dungeons and the more difficult quests. And of course in things like the first cutscene in the game.

The raids and dungeons don’t really have any story either, they’re more like setpieces with a backstory found almost exclusively on the website.

WoW does well what it’s supposed to do, it’s basically a hack-n-slash “RPG” aimed at the casual market. I don’t hold it against them, but I’ve tried it now for almost a month and I can say it’s just not up my alley.

And I’m sorry, but having to spend months on end grinding your way from level 1 to level 80 to get to the good stuff (or so you say) just doesn’t cut it for me.

The problem I have is that people who’ve only played WoW will think that’s what RPG games are, and they’d be very much mistaken. I’m not saying that only ultra hardcore RPG games like the old Fallout games are true RPG games. Games like Morrowind, KotOR and Dragon Age, spring to mind as recent modern RPG games with a lot of depth and good story.

There is no reason why a MMORPG like WoW couldn’t have it’s story better explored in game and have better quests with more options besides ‘accept’ and ‘decline’.

Hopefully the upcoming The Old Republic MMO will be more like this

Anyway, I think we’ve strayed too much off topic with this :expressionless:

I could see Ram doing that. Wait, hasn’t he already? Or all the devs could make posts that just say, “It’s done” and not respond to anything for a week. I think brains would explode.

You, my friend, are teh creative one, and you get +3 ePoints for this post. I must ask however - would the Gordon outfit include helmet or no? And if not, would you grow a real beard or use a spur-of-the-moment-spirit-gum-and-pubic-hair solution?

Haha, geo-caching. Splinterheads ftw.

And you should guarantee that the settlement is for an exorbitant amount of money - you can keep the majority, and the rest can be distributed amongst forum goers (registered at time of announcement) as payment for pain and suffering.

Agreed on all accounts

On a serious note, I would go with a Steam distribution if possible, along with torrenting and maybe one or two dedicated mirrors for distribution after the fact.

Better not. When they launched L4D2 DLC i wasn’t able to log into Steam for whole day - and i can only imagine how would it look when a lot of people will jump onto long awaited BM.
