How were you introduced and what got you into purchasing Half-Life?

I woke up one morning with my arms and legs bound by rope. Upon opening my eyes, I realized I wasn’t in my room. I laid silent in the middle of an empty warehouse floor, walls soaked with blood and rust. Human and animal appendages strewn around with a thick layer of broken glass completely covering the floor. As I lay naked and cold, I tried to think of a way out of the madness. I swiftly cut myself loose of my constrictions. Upon inspection of the room, I find a large gate. Obviously remotely locked, I further searched the room. A small computer console sits in the corner. Upon slugging my bloodied, naked body up, the computer clicks on and a text file pops up. The file tells me that the computer will unlock and open the gate if I have the correct key word. The file further tells me that the key is written on a small metallic plaque buried within my body. After hours of turmoil, I decide to cut the plaque out with a large piece of broken glass. I enter the key into the computer and am about to press “OPEN” when I notice a small icon in the corner of the desktop.

Intrigued, I clicked the icon and was introduced to Half-Life. That was 7 years ago.
To this day I remain in this room, feasting on rotten flesh, and enjoying my time spent within.

I was like 8 year old in 2000, i was back from the trip of holiday, i first thing i see is my second brother play half-life, that moment of scientist get drag into vent and gib flying out… i just can’t forgot that, i tho it is counter strike until my friend told me it is Half-Life.

Half Life was my first PC game ,I remember one time walking with my mom in the neighbourhood, and I was like ,I dunno ,10? And some kid that I knew passes by and I ask him how he is ,and he tells me he’s going to the gaming cafe .And I was like “Gaming Cafe?!What’s that?” and he showed me the way,and I went with my mom and I played 1 hour or so ,after that … well , It went under my skin. First I played multiplayer a lot, then I went and played the Singleplayer part. That’s when I first met Mr. Gordon Freeman. 10 years from then,Half Life series has become my all time favorite franchise. It is still the best for me.

(this happened this year)i had $5 and was with my mom and dad going to some yard sales, one of the first ones we went to was selling computer games for a dollar so i bought with my $5 half life 1,portal,half life 2(episodes 1 and 2 were on the disc),team fortress, and Demigod(obviously those people knew nothing about pc games).

I grew up being a pc gamer and I had heard about this game half life many times before and after the hl2 release and recently bought all the half life games in the past 2 years, giving me more reason to be a pc fanboy, and more importantly a valve fanboy.

Ahh… In the years somewhere around 1998-1999 my cousins always played Half-Life on local multiplayer (as they are 10 people they had quite a lot of computers) and if was here I was taught the principles of deathmatch! A couple of years later I borrowed the game and dwelved deep into the world of singleplayer HL, OF and BS, finding a story I never came to forget and mysteries that still intrigues me.

I was just 5, and my dad used to work for Valve. I got to help playtest it all, and that was my favorite game, but my first was Unreal Tournament :stuck_out_tongue:

well. i saw it once at a buddys puter, around release. i was approx. 16.
thought it looked quite mesmerizing. i never put much effort into playing it myself though. like writing down what it was called :stuck_out_tongue:
about a year ago, i was looking for new games to play. and i’m very picky with games. it’s gotta be nothing but the best if i’m gonna play it through.
this time i settled for HL. it’s widely recognized as one of the absolute greatest ever, so it’s gotta be good. i was skeptic though, as always.
it’s funny how i forgot all this time. and ultimately it was eerie recognizing so much in the first chapter.
i’m glad i tried it out. it proved to be ridiculously good/so much better than i could imagine.

then i had to become an xbox-owner before i could continue with HL2…

which, gasp was even better.

I just bought the Orange Box for PC because I wasn’t going to pay like twice the price for Call of Duty 4

'nuff said

Back when it first came out my buddy got it for his PC. He called me over to come and play it, I’ve seen my cousin play it a few times but I never actually got to play it until I went to my friends and I was blown away. I loved it, I stayed there for a week playing it. He eventually let me borrow the disc and at the time, it didn’t even on my family computer, haha!

A few years later, I got it for PS2 and played it non stop. That’s how I got started with Half life. My friend and I would stay up all night playing Decay and death match together. Good times indeed.

I got the Half-Life Generations pack, it includes HL1/Op4/BS/CS

I didn’t really purchase Half-Life. Rather, my brother bought Blue Shift for me, with Opposing Force included without the need for Half-Life itself. A few years after I got Blue Shift, I typed in the cd key for my Blue Shift installation into the product registry and I got Half-Life, Blue Shift, Opposing Force, Counterstrike, Ricochet, Deathmatch Classic, Day of Defeat and Team Fortress altogether at once.

Half Life wasnt my first pc game (first pc game was on a floppy disc and was on a primative pc that didnt even have a keyboard). My first modern pc game was in 1995 on windows 95 and that was the Titanic game they released.

How ever I got introduced to Half Life by a guy in computer class in late 1998 early 1999 (I have seen the game on the shelf before but never was interested in it just looking at the box). Seeing him play the game I became interested in it and as of now I have kept up on the Half Life series. Even got the Gearbox add ons Blueshift and Opposing Force when they first came out even though some people around these parts say they dont exsist but they are still good games.

Umm lets see… Over the summer, (I forgot what caused it,) I logged into my brother’s Steam account to see what it (Steam) was like. I then proceeded to install the original Half-life, along with the second. I think it took me pretty much the whole summer to beat the game, and then I moved onto HL2. HL2 took me until about November due to school work and such… I didn’t actually know what was going on until I looked it up. I liked it so much I asked for the Orange Box for Christmas, which I received due to the great deals. (My brother did not have any of the episodes, plus I wanted to play Portal.) After I finished the two episodes, I decided to go back on my brother’s account and play Blue Shift and Opposing Force (which he already had for awhile).

So yeah, nothing really that interesting.

When I moved back to Indonesia (where I was born) my cousin had a copy of Half Life 2 and Counter-Strike on Steam, bundled together that he got from his dad in Singapore. I was living with his family at the time, and played it during the summer and thought it was amazing. Played it four more times.

Then, I looked up Half Life on steam and found that the anthology pack was up there. Thought ‘Why the hell not?’ and bought a copy. Minutes later, I realized that I was still on my cousin’s Steam account, facepalmed, and bought it again, this time, gifting it to my email account.

Two years later, one of my friends showed up at school with an un-steam-registered retail copy of the Orange Box (completely impossible to find in the aforementioned country where I live) and I offered to buy it off him for a decent price. He accepted since he already had a copy.

Been playin’ vidja gaimes ever since.

I was 13, bought game magazines, there was a disk in there with demos. Half-Life Uplink was on that disk. It was the best game on that demo. I loved it. Played it over and over again.

Then my mom got it for me on my 14th birthday, a big orange box with massive loads of awesome in it (also a Caesar 3 demo, also loved that game, until I hit the sprite-cap. I was sad).

When I first heard of Steam like 2-4 years ago, I installed and started browsing the store. Then I had a flashback of my big bro pwning Nihilanth when I arrived @ action section. Then I bought it and pwned all expansions also and tried TF1 for like 5 mins and quit. Then I bought Orange Box and later on UT3 and CSS and my latest purchase was Audiosurf and Stalker: Shadow of my House :stuck_out_tongue:

Back in 1998 a friend borrowed me a bunch of CDs with games (pirated :pirate  and one of them was untitled. So I asked him what it was and he said that “it’s some cool game but I won’t be able to run it anyways” (I had amd k5 75Mhz and 8mb of RAM back then). So I’ve put it away and forgot about it for couple of days. Then my brother noticed the CD and asked what was on it. I told him and he said that I should check the game anyway. I did that and it turned out that I was able to play it, even tho it was about 2x slower than usual (something like bullet time but a bit jumpy :stuck_out_tongue: ). About 2-3 years ago I bought the proper version.

One day, my best friend called me and asked me if I were interested in playing with him something together on PC, I agreed and then he came to me. We thought about what we could play, and then he said, we could look for Half-Life in several shops, we found Half-Life in a little shop hidden somewhere in the darkest corner, we bought it for 6€ and then we played together Half-Life. Next day when he was gone I started to play the Singleplayer, and I was fastinated.

I was browsing through used games at EB Games and saw the PS2 version on the shelf. Decided to buy it because I had heard good things about the game. After playing through it for awhile I loved it.
