How were you introduced and what got you into purchasing Half-Life?

I remember playing the PS2 version of HL1 on a PS2 demo disc and i thought it looked pretty cool and like something i hadnt played before, so i got it for ps2 then bought the pc one with the expansions. Then read on the front cover of a mag that hl 2 was comin out, so i was hooked since then

I had recently quit playing Doom in august, and had heard about it. After that, I obtained it on the internet. A little bit later i got Hl2.

I first heard of the series in 2005, when browsing some greasy aspieā€™s LEGO website, where he had pictures of his custom minifigures:

I thought the designs were cool, so I looked it up. Being a little faggot at the time, I went out and bought the xbocks version of HL2.

I now own every single Half-Life game on Steam except for HL2.

A long time ago I played Half Life Day One as a demo my dad got from some flea market. I canā€™t remember how many years ago it was but I remember it was really fun then about 2 years ago I rediscovered the game and beat it like 3 times.

Bought the Orange Box for Team Fortress 2. Was waiting on a graphics card so that I could try out the rest of the games so I bought Half-Life 1 since I knew it would run fine on my computer.

Back in 2000/2001 if I remember. A cousin of mine had the game (the complete pack I think) and played it from time to time. I had a few goes but I wasnā€™t really interested in the series until I wanted to try it again in 2004, so I got a steam account and bought Half Life: Generation eventually moving on to Source Engine games.

I think I saw some kind of mini walkthrough of the Nova Prospekt level on x-play in 2004 and thought the game looked awesome. So I completely forgot about it for a two or three years until I got fed up with Battlefield 2ā€™s shitty engine, thought about Half-Life 2 again and decided to buy the Orange Box. Played through it and all the episodes, thought it was great, and decided to check out Half-Life 1.

Well, lol, it was a dark and stormy day in 29 Palms (really it was), we were around the house doing the fuck if I remember, when we heard a knock at the door. It was our friend next door, he had a HUGE orange box in his hand with Half-Life as the title. He told my dad that the game was amazing! (Dont know why he didnt keep it, but good thing he didnt) My dad, right away installed it (I was 7 at the time, and this was when the game first came out) I remember sitting there watching him shoot up aliens, and jumping when ever a headcrab popped out at him in the vents, he eventually burnt me a copy of the game. I later played Blue Shift when I snucked onto my dads PC when he was in Egypt. Theres my TRUE STORY of the first time I came across Half-Life. The End, no happy endings here.

I was at a friends house he said it was a game from heaven I was a fan from the R.C. I play every game I rent to the end. :freeman:

As embarrassing as it is to say, I first learned of Half-Life from its PlayStation 2 demo. I played it, fell in love, and rented it later on, making it to Surface Tension before having to return the rental. I remember seeing the boxes for it on PC and wishing I had one strong enough to run the damn game. Blue Shift and OpFor also intrigued me sitting there with the other PC games at the store. And somewhere deep in my testicles I felt I had to play this fascinating ā€œCounter-Strikeā€ as they called it.

Later on after that, I bought it used for the PS2 and finally finished it, it was like a gaming orgasm.

I read all kinds of trivia and information about the game online too over the years, and as of lately with the purchase of a new computer, bought every single Half-Life game on Steam, along with Counter-Strike and stuff.

That children, is how JamestheDoc became an FPS gamerā€¦ Now go get me a soda and make yourselves useful, Iā€™m pwning noobs.

The first time I saw hl was as a tech demo in a computer storeā€¦ Pimping a surround sound system. (suposedly it was the first game to be ā€˜fullyā€™ surround sound) I kicked around on the timed promo/demo, I say this because the announcement system was counting down a self destruct, which took an awesomely creepy and made it more so. It also let you out to the tracks in unforseen con. which got me so lostā€¦ to this day I wonder why that copy was so unique.

Years later when my comp could handle it I bought the HL/OP4/TFC packā€¦ loved it ever since

P.S. best cockroach thread ever, welcome to Black Mesa

iā€™m just gonna veer off topic for a moment : What the crap is with all these people whoā€™re playing Half-Life out of order! itā€™s one thing to start with Half-Life2 because you might not have been gaming in '98. The game is different enough and most everything important from the original is explainedā€¦more or less. But why would you play the original Half-Life and then jump clear up to Episodes without playing 2!? Moreover, why would you want to play Episodes first, Half-Life second and 2 after that? Everybody i know who doesnā€™t like Half-Life either played the games out of order or played only one out of the series without starting from the beginning.

Yeah, sure, Momento was an awesome movie, but Half-Life is one epic storyline that canā€™t be told out of order without losing a huge amount of facts, experiences and feelings.

Itā€™s all due to your annoying signature. What goes around comes around.

Iā€™ve told my story too many times, so Iā€™ll make a concise version.

I buy games the same way I buy books, by checking the blurb and seeing what itā€™s about. Nothing pisses my off more than picking up a novel, looking at the backs and seeing but nothing but quotes from critics.

Sadly this was the case with Half Life. The first time I saw the game it looked pretty neat, but reading the box gave me nothing but crap about advanced graphics, physics and performance. That put me off buying it.

Same thing happened with HL2; the cover just boasted about the bloody Source engine and told me nothing of what it was about! Another game placed back on the shelf.

It was only after hearing what the game was like and playing Uplink that I finally bought the HL1 Anthology and the HL2 games.

If it makes you feel any better, when I heard about HL2 I went and played HL1, OF & BS before playing HL2 & the episodes.

I ā€œcompletedā€ the games in this order:

Blue Shift
Half Life 2
Half Life 1
Opforce
Ep1
Portal
Ep2

I first attempted to complete HL around 2001, but I sucked because I wasnā€™t used to such awesome gameplay at the time.

My cousin had a copy of the game shortly after it was released. I was hooked. Iā€™m ashamed to say, however, that I never legally purchased a version of my own.

I still have the WON version around here somewhere, actually.

Well, thatā€™s better than most. At least you did Blue Shift so you knew what all the jazz about Black Mesa and the Vortigaunts and stuff were about.

My cousin showed me HL1 when I was 9, since then I was hooked.

My previous computer was an ancient fossil, so I was trying to find good games I could actually run on it. I stumbled across Half-Life, vaguely remembered something about it being really good, downloaded the demo, and was immediately hooked.

The rest is history.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valveā€™s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
