Well, actually I’m not new here.
Values such as lock-on speed and damage per hornet obviously can be adjusted for needs of balance.
It kinda works that way now.
If you aim hornet gun at an entity then the hornets will follow that entity (The code knows you want to directly target that entity, so it sets the hornets to follow that entity).
Another reason for this design is to prevent you from accidentally killing friendlies unless of course you directly fire upon them.
edit: We also took extra measure like increasing damage, speed, and what not to ensure it is an effective weapon unlike how it was in HL.
Reminds me of the Halo Needler.
Minus the pink. And the asplode.

I dislike the having to lock on to someone for a period of time because really, the hornet gun was just there so that you could always have a ranged attack and is only a last resort gun Imo, and any more restrictions would make it more of a hinderance than anything useful.
Are you kidding? The hivehand became my primary weapon except on hard difficulty.
same, the fact that it was horribly weak did not outdo the fact that it had unlimited ammo. however in multiplayer where there is a rather large supply of munitions to go round I see no reason in giving it another handicap.
Just keep it like the way Hornet gun used to, i rarely use Hornet gun anyway, but i gonna make love with Hornet gun when the Black Mesa is release.
You fire hornet and it will track a target eventually exploding.
The little addition I mentioned above allows you to specifically target one entity.
That is why I loved the Needler in Halo 1&2, it was a beautiful weapon, with beautiful kills. Then, like almost everything Bungie did for Halo 3, the screwed it up, getting rid of the time delayed explosion, and making it more like an auto-aiming assault rifle, the damn thing almost never explodes anymore, it just stabs you to death.
Back on track, how exactly could you justify a locking mechanism if there was one? Sure it might be OK for gameplay, but the Hive Hand is not exactly synthetic, how would you know how to use it. I am personally impressed that Gordon managed to get it to work in the first place, much less use features like Target designation and Locking, it just doesn’t seem to suit the weapon. The current method sounds much better.
Yeah, just keep it the way it is. The original in half-life almost act like that too.
(almost, i repeat, almost)
The same way you justify human using an alien organic weapon without any research.
I’ve only recently realized that turrets target and try to shoot the hornets - makes for a good distraction. I wonder if this will also be in BM?
EDIT: slogged through 200+ pages of the questions thread and found a “sort-of” answer that the turrets won’t shoot down hornets… I suppose this also means they won’t target them and at least try to shoot them either…
At least in H3 you could get multiple explosions from a single kill, unlike H2.
H1 Needler was the best though.
(Sort of) Topic: Anyone else found the Hivehand useful for taking down AGrunts? :3
To me, it seemed about as effective as using the shockroach against the shocktrooper in Opposing Force
Rapid-fire function works wonders against the AGrunts.
And the best part is that you don’t spend precious other ammo.
I would assume the locking is something automatic when the weapon is fired. That is, if there is an organic target within a certain focus of the direction the weapon is pointed, projectiles automatically lock on and track that target.
As far as Gordon figuring out how to use it… Well it seems like there must be something you pull or push or squeeze and it’s not going to be on the business end of the weapon. Gordon is a scientist after all, he’s not totally incompetent. It should be interesting to see how Ross Scott acts that part out on Freeman’s Mind (assuming he gets that far in the series).
I’ve always wondered why Gordon’s HEV suit could identify alien weaponry, complete with a selection image.
It’s not like Gordon was part of the Xen Survey Teams…
Not like it matters though.
Anyway, the thing is from Xen and it’s alien. Who knows how it works…
You stick your hand up its ass; How the hell does any of it work…
