You probably have another instance of hl.exe running. Open Task Manager and terminate the process.
try running it from steam
I mean who doesn’t have all the goldsrc games on steam?
I purposely opened the Half-life GCF a while ago and extracted all it’s contents so I could use it without steam. Works just like the old version, menu and everything.
The old menu with the logo animation was boss.
You might try patching it to the latest version. Google it.
Maybe he has a boxed-copy of Half-Life from Sierra and he lost the disk, maybe that’s why.
the original Half Life CD might as well be the pirated version because CD keys like 3333333333333 always work

If you activate an HL1 cd key on steam it will give you the “Platinum Package” (I think it’s called), which includes all of those except CSCZ as well as HL, OP4 and BS
nope, not always.
I was never able to activate my original HL key, even sending them a pic of the box + key didn’t help.
I inserted my old Blue shift key in steam and I was able to download HL/BS/OP/Cs/DoD and TF. X-D
I bought the platinum collection which had HL, OF, BS and CS, so I had 4 CD keys to use on Steam
