Help me mod Oblivion

I just got a new computer, and I plan on using it to it’s full potential by spending way too long playing Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Morrowind. I figured I’d start with Oblivion.

I already have OBMM and OBSE, and I seem to recall there being an unofficial patch, but I can’t find the list of mods I had been planning on getting, and it was on that list.

Basically, I want some suggestions on mods necessary to make the UI and menus generally better, as well as possibly improve performance.

Quests, items, hair, races, body replacement, face meshes, etc are all welcome, but what I want most is to make the game more playable and (if possible) looking prettier.

Thanks to anyone who gives me the names of good mods.
(I already have an account on TES Nexus, I just don’t know where to start because there is so much there :stuck_out_tongue: other sites are fine too)

Well from what I’ve learned from fo3 and Nv is that the unofficial patches will not work with a majority of newer mods.

A few mods to try:
Stutter remover, any 4gb extender, coloured map, map markers, DarNified UI and Qarls Texture Pack.

If you really want to mod the game get used to the Construction set then you can edit your pc or other npc’s the way you want them to look, hair, clothes the weapons they use blah blah. Its time consuming and requires merged patches with the other mod’s you want to use but it’s worth it.

That is an amazing site full of mods for both Morrowind and Oblivion, so I’d take a look there. Like Reaper, I suggest Qarl’s texture pack it’s a really good rehaul, you can download it here: https://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=oblivionmods.detail&id=2363

Here’s an Image showing the difference:

That alone is a great improvement IMO, and there are many other overhauls for Oblivion.

Shameless self-plugging

Annoyances:

Take all hotkey, a la FO3
Much, much better hotkeys
get rid of annoying “How Many?” prompts etc.
levelled Items level with you, so you’re not stuk with shitty versions of stuff just because you competed the quest at a low level
Always +5 for levelling, so you don’t have to do annoying selective training / levelhold

Aesthetic:

Unique Book Jackets - because I’m a hoarder :stuck_out_tongue:
darnified ui - fixes awful console ui

Other:

Unofficial patch + unofficial patch for all dlc

And there’s always FCOM + quest mods but I’m not into that.

EDIT: Shiiit, didn’t realise my answer would be so hyooj.

Yeah, I know, that’s why

Thanks everyone, this should be a good starting point. I’ll check all of this stuff out when I get home.

If anyone has anything to add, keep 'em coming. We could always reference this thread later if someone wants to mod Oblivion.

Sadly Oblivion won’t launch now. Guess I have to pick and choose which mods to actually use. Or try without that unofficial patch.

The game launches, and I see a few frames of the Bethesda video, then the game exits with no error popup or anything. Do I need to sort out my load order? I only have 12 mods, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Edit: launching with no mods seems to be fine, so it’s not the unofficial patch. (unless it clashes with some mods) The only things it would be running are the patch, OBSE, and the texture pack. I’ll see if I can pin down which mod/mods it is tomorrow, I don’t feel like dealing with it right now :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit 2: I launched the game for shits and giggles. :fffuuu:

If you have not done do, get Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. Then get all of the unofficial update packages for everything. For looks, get Qarl’s texture pack and natural environments. If you are up for a challenge but a better more rewarding experience get FCOM. There is a program called BOSS that will help manage the starting order for all of the mods so that things break less often. For more quests The Lost Spires and Kvatch Aftermath were fun.

Makae sure you’re not using aversion of an mod which is intented for use with a dlc you don’t have. If an esp is dependent on another esp and that esp is not loaded, Oblivion will crash.

I have all of the official DLC, got the GotY edition. (or whatever it’s called, the one that comes with the horse armor)

Are you being sarcastic here? Or is this “new” PC actually 6 years old…

Just checking.

Isn’t it obvious?

And the facial textures seem to work fine now, and I didn’t remove the texture packs. Odd IMO. I have checked most of my mods to see which one was keeping the game from starting, and there’s about 3 left that i need to check. It’s probably just not installed right (I just OBMM’d each download, didn’t do anything special unless it said it needed it in the readme)

That’s the right thing to do. Unless it was packaged in some odd way, it should be fine.

That’s what I thought, which is why I did it. :stuck_out_tongue:

When I get around to figuring out which one it is, I’ll make sure the file structure is right before running it through OBMM.

I think I’m gonna make a new character and get them through the sewers before worrying any more about mods. Just so I have a bigger testing bed, and can more easily make sure the mods are working.
