Headphones Bitches!

I’m looking at headphones. I have some Sony ear hook-buds, but I’m looking for something with a bit more punch.

What do you recommend for a good pair of headphones that will deliver good bass, durability, comfort, and a good overall mixture of sound. I will be mainly using this for heavy metal, so maybe that factors into it.

Not looking to spend more than $100, folks.

Steelseries Siberia V2 is great for gaming, someone else will have to say if they’re good enough for heavy metal though.

You looking for IEMs or cans?

If you’re looking for full size closed cans ATH M50 is the best there is under $100.

Well, how do IEMs and closed cans compare in the sound department?

Well, I, for example, can’t stand wearing IEMs for more than a couple of hours and I also like the sound of full size phones better. I only use IEMs when I can’t take my cans with me.
Of course, there could be people who prefer IEMs to cans for all I know.

I’m prob going for cans.

Also I’ll prob look into the ATH M50 mentioned.

Audio Technica ATH-M50 (more bass)
Shure SRH-440 (more neutral)
Denon D1001 aka Creative Aurvana Live! (wouldn’t know)
Sony MDR-V6 or 7506 (more highs)
Sony MDR-XB700 (super bassy)
there’re also some good ones from Sennheiser

[EDIT] these are all closed-back cans. If you don’t care about sound isolation there’re a bunch of good open-back phones too.

I wish they’d let you test-run headphones at the store.

From what I’ve heard, you can, actually. People refer to that magic place as guitar center or something.

Huh, I didn’t realize they let you test headphones at Guitar Center…I must verify this!

You all suck. I go only for Bose and Grado.

Depending on where you are. London Drugs lets you try Cans, and over ear. Buds are sealed.

Sennheiser HD280’s are pretty good closed back phones available at places like Guitar Center for about $100 or so. Comfortable and fairly rugged too.

I use Turtle Beach AK-R8s with an external sound card. 5.1 surround sound. Only problem with them is that they will hurt your ears after an hour and a half of using them and I use a laptop so its a pain to carry them around, so I usually just go with Skull Candy earbuds. They AK-R8s are $99.
