HD Camera

Whats a good HD camera to get? Would it be the Flip camera?

Probably not what you’re looking for, but here’s my (soon to be) new toy :stuck_out_tongue:

But more seriously; you have to give more details. What do you want to do with it, what is your price range, how portable do you need it to be?

I personally use the XHA1, but that might be a bit bulky for your purposes (especially if you’re considering using a flip, which I’ve heard good things about but couldn’t recommend personally); a lot of my friends have the Canon VIXIA HF200, which seems to work pretty well.

If you’re going for a flip-cam then you definitely want the Canon HV40. The XHA1 can only shoot HD if it has HDV tapes, however the HV40 can film HD on regular DV tapes, which are cheaper and more commonly used.

The quality isn’t the “true” HD you’d get filming on HDV with an XHA1, but its VERY NICE faux-HD; plus its relatively cheap for the quality picture it produces, a friend of mine recently got one for $600.

Here’s some test footage one of my friends recorded with his HV40, be sure to watch in the highest quality your computer can handle (Mine can only handle 720p on YouTube for some reason):

I want take pics and make movies, dont care about the price and dont care how portable it is.

You don’t know what you talkin about, brah. XHA1 shoots HD on standard MiniDV tapes. Believe me.

Seriouisly? Because I know the XHA1, I had to know the manual backwards and forwards for a film class I was taking last year, and if I overlooked that I’d probably shoot my own left foot :fffuuu:

Which model do you use, the 2006-2008 or the post 2008 model?

I am not going to buy a camera until they release an affordable one that records at 7680 × 4320.

Red

um… I would rather buy a house, or possibly a Porsche.

How professional are you looking to get? If you’re looking to go all out and buy the best money can buy, the more expensive the better (generally in the really high range). But if you’re looking for an advanced entry level video camera, the HF200 is a great choice. It’s good enough to give nice results, but still relatively inexpensive. If you’d rather have a digital camera that can still take decent video, the Canon 7D is quite nice camera although it would be worth waiting a while for the price to come down. But I’m taking it that you are looking for more of a video camera. Try looking at this website and figuring out which category you fall under. There are so many choices out there it all depends on how much you want to spend and what you are using it for. Go too high and it’s a waste of money, too low and you’ll regret it later.

Don’t say you don’t care about the price. You can get the best stuff in the world, but it’ll be long out of your price range. Unless you want the best stuff money can buy, give us a price range we can look in.

Straight from the Canon website: “Recording Media: MiniDV Cassette”. The model I’m using I believe is a 2007 make, but I’m not solid on that. I do know that the XHA1 has always been a MiniDV machine from the beginning.

EDIT: I mean, HDV tapes are basically just MiniDV tapes with a different type of error detection. They’re not even higher quality material. It’s just digital storage.
