Hazardous Environment Combat Unit

First of all, hi everybody! I’ve just registered and I’m happy to be here. I think when Black Mesa Source is released, I’ll probably enjoy it even more than Half Life 2. :freeman:

I have a small suggestion to make, regarding the HECU. I know that, in the original Half Life, they commonly wear no helmets, berets, or balaclavas with cigars hanging out of their mouths. I find this rather, to put it bluntly, kinda stupid. Their name says “Hazardous Environment” and the first thing I think of is something like these guys:

This seems more true to the name, not to mention cooler and more professional looking. In addition, it might fit more with their role as enemies. The Combine Civil Protection and soldiers in HL2 are cool enemies because they’re faceless and scary. Black Mesa Source HECU should be like this as well, because of their roles as enemies who invade the research facility. So, I think the majority of them should have at least gas masks, and less typical military gear.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Grunts currently use the face generation system to randomly determine what it should look like. In some instances the marine will have a mask, beret, and/or other accessories.

The mask is closest thing you will come across as the odds of a new model with hazardous prevention fluffy uniforms at this point is zero.

and thank god for that

In all honesty, even though he has a point, we are remaking Half-life 1 to achieve the feel and experience. Not change it all up…

Yes, I figured that you guys would most likely want to keep as much to the original as possible, and that’s probably best.

That picture that OrderofDragon posted is pretty cool, I like those a lot.

Well, I think the idea is worth considerating, but in game the HECU marines look stronger and more “mobile” the way they look like. Besides, the HECU must have known that Black Mesa is an “alien invasion scenario” and not a viral or biochemical disaster, I find it logic that they brought heavy weapons with combat armors, instead of these protective suits with submachine guns.

Have you seen the movie Resident Evil: Apocalypse? The movie wasn’t really good, but I did like the beginning of it: the Umbrella Corporation sends a team to reopen the Hive, to find out what happened down there. Well they’re wearing suits like the ones RestlessMind suggested…

… and they’ve lasted for like ten seconds if memory serves.

Ever seen The Crazies? In the original the army guys all have those fluffy white suits and gas masks, but in the remake they’re rockin HECU-esque gear

Because the SAS the only military branch in the world that utilizes gas masks. Especially since they only really do that in video games.

No, the guys in the movie are the good ol’ US Army

No I meant the Norwegian airline company SAS:

:retard:

Dude

classic

I think that they do use gasmasks often, unless someone here knows better than me. But I’ve seen quite many pictures of SAS Teams wearing gasmasks in Google.

Practically every modern military force has some sort of gas mask. It’s somewhat iconic w/ the SAS but I really doubt they always have them

SAS sucks mondo balls as far as hazardous environment protocol goes…

Sometimes a picture sums up a post better than words ever can.

You are working on the mod?

Maybe he helped in a community project…

How do they know there aren’t alien germs teleporting to Earth from Xen, anyway?

They only use them for counter-terrorism operations, the dramatic stuff you see where they wear black and kick the windows in. Besides it looking cool, it’s mainly because they use a lot of tear gas.

Everyone in the UK armed forces (and it’s no doubt the same elsewhere) learns how to use a respirator and NBC suit in training. The respirator looks very much like the one on the HECU guys in the picture up yonder, except it has a black cylinder under the chin, which is your oxygen bottle. The NBC suit is just a big baggy charcoal lined smock and trousers with rubber boots to go over whatever you’re wearing.

But anyway, the BM models look badass; much more important in a videogame

Everybody in the US military learns how to use gas masks, as well as go into the gas chamber with no mask on (like most militaries do).

But in any case, Mastershot has a really good point. There could be alien microorganisms involved.
