I think you’ve got the right feel of the room, but it’s hard to judge without seeing more. All I’ll say is that you should try to avoid bare rooms with a few objects in to make them seem less empty. That’s easy to do. Each room should have some sort of use, whether that’s observation, mechanical, ventilation, technical etc.
I remember back in Half-life 1, Gina’s voice sound familiar with the tram voice, checking now.
Edit: Indeed, that is the same voice.
I vote for Catzeye voice acting.
It would be awesome if Black Mesa team provide them a hev suit model, less likely.
I’m pretty sure it was the same voice actor.
lol, now that’s an impressive :ninja:! Anyway, I’d love to see what you’ve done so far
Not a bad start Spooboy! Although why are your ‘yellow’ tube lights producing a cool blue light !?
I just read through the whole thread and I have a question.
I think deciding that the Hazard Course should be makeshift and improvised is definitely the right way to go. But, if it’s all so makeshift, low-budget and quickly thrown together… why are there holograms in there? Why isn’t there simply a Black Mesa science team employee walking with you through the course and instructing you along the way?
This seems a lot more plausible to me. Unless maybe I’m overlooking something here? But I think if Black Mesa would makeshift a Hazard Course in jumping by using parts from a rocket and wooden crates, they would not then go and spend time and money on recording a hologram and installing a hologram projector in the same room.
Just my $0,02.
Haven’t even started on the lighting or detailing really, just getting it layed out. But thanks for pointing that out non the less, Ill fix that right away.
Personally I figure the holo emitters are fairly portable and can be installed anywhere on the cheap (though their original cost is another matter, I’d imagine they had a few in stock for whatever reason). As for why record a hologram… would you want to walk around the Hazard Course with every new recruit and say the same lines over and over again? Also the recording of the hologram should be a pretty cheap and painless procedure [cue voice actors insisting otherwise].
Regarding voice acting or actual scripts for the Hazard Course, please realize that this stage of work is normally done in the last 90-95 percent of development. So talking about it at this stage is not really realistic. Right now you folks should concentrate more on concept, design and implementation. The script and voice stuff you can work out later.
Again, it is likely you folks will get Gina and Guard lines after the release of the mod but as with anything, it could change. Just work towards the goal of completing this level and leave the worrying of the details for later.

@Spooboy - I was kinda teasing you with the lights, you don’t have to rush off to ‘fix’ it. Also if you want your maps to become part of this project don’t get to carried away to early. Our concepts and further discussion could change the maps rather dramatically. Of course if your doing it for S&Gs then please carry on
RE ‘holograms’: Perhaps Gina began the training through the hazard course in person, but as she is required elsewhere to do science it was the most cost effective to have the hologram programmed.
I have some ideas regarding the room where you get the HEV suit… It doesn’t make much sense to have the suit on a random walkway in the middle of an empty silo… Why is it there? It’s there for effect. That’s why I want to keep it there.
So how do I intend to justify it being there?
Below the walkway there is a maintenance ‘pit’, where there are two HEV chambers, a spare suit, various technical gizmos and computer consoles, a scientist or two. In the centre, there’s an elevator (free standing, not enclosed) to bring the HEV suit up to the trainee coming in via elevator and participating on the level above. The lighting (and distance between walkway and pit) should be balanced so that you see the HEV suit first, and don’t see the techies down there unless you look.
If you don’t get the drift or not sure how that would look, I’m happy to do some sketches or map it out (the latter probably easier)
I reckon there should be a dead scientist in an HEV suit on the floor, surrounded by bullsquid gibs. You have to drag the corpse out of the HEV suit before putting it on yourself!
this is the hazard course which is BEFORE RC.
Oh Catz, I was hoping to mock anyone who couldn’t recognise the facetious nature of my post. Since its you, I’m going to have to be nice!
:facepalmingMyself:
I’ll try my hand at an Armory map… might post some WIP pics later…
That first room you did is very similar to mine, you even used the same wall and floor textures! great minds think alike!
Anyway, when I was doing mine a few years ago, I obviously didn’t have a gina model, but I did have the sound files, so if we don’t want to model, rig and animate Gina, we could do what I did and just play the sound files through a loud speaker?
Comprimise? It would also get rid of what everyone was saying about “but if it’s makeshift how come there are holograms waa”
What do you mean everyone was saying? One person said.
It was a generalisation, chillout
If we struggle too much with the holographic, I think it would be just as realistic to have speakers telling you what to do. Like Glados possibly? But i didnt see any cameras in Half-life. Is that something we should add?
