But the dev team are actually community modders too! Is it really so much trouble? You’d think that not being the official company would make the devs less separated from the average community. Or is it just some legal issue bullshit that’s the problem?
So there’s a lot that goes into getting a community mod/map/item accepted into a game. I’m NOT TALKING JUST ABOUT BLACK MESA, I’m including other games, like CS:GO and TF2, I’m speaking broadly from my experiences.
Legal stuffs: The big one, as you pointed out, is legal. You have to compensate everyone who contributed an asset to the project. Are all the assets being used legally? If someone used an asset from another game (any game), you have to check legality of us. You can’t use someone else’s work to make money. Where did the materials in each asset come from? Are those being used legally. It’s hard to keep track of those things if you aren’t actively doing it.
Design: How is it designed? I haven’t really had a chance to run through this Hazard course myself, so I can’t speak for it specifically. While something might work and work well for a small community its microcosm, games aren’t just limited to that small community. You need to look at people who haven’t played the game before, people who aren’t part of this community, young players, old players, etc. etc. There’s a lot to consider when making levels and designing games, far more than you expect and far more than I’m listing here. If it’s not up to snuff, it’s not beneficial to bring it into the bigger game. Again, I’m not specifically talking about this version of Hazard Course, as I have not played it. I am speaking generally, from my experience.
Art: How does it look? Every games have prevailing themes and a certain level of detail that they reach. If someone doesn’t visually look up to snuff, or cohesive with the games theme(s)… thats another mark against it being picked up.
Sound: Same dealio as the other 2.
I hope I didn’t sound too harsh or mean or condescending here. I come from a modding background; I love and adore modding communities, they do great work sometimes, but I wanted to point out some things that a lot of people seem to neglect.
ok thanks for the heads-up, I will have to look in my user settings and see if I can change the colours of this excellent site my old eyes do find it hard reading here, eye fatigue
Oh hey, yea, you’re ALWAYS allowed to ask these types of questions. If you’re wondering why something is from a designer/developer standpoint just ASK! I’m ALWAYS happy to answer those types of questions (unless some NDA or something tells me not too ).
It’s not exactly hard to just download the mod while BM is installing, why is there always the whole “MAKE IT UPFICIALL OFDATE” nonsense? This happens on the SRB2 forums also, and it- well actually it’s less of a problem because they’re using a 25 year old engine but my point still stands
I think it’s just people thinking that without them, Black Mesa is “incomplete,” and thus addons should be included by default, even though it’s a waste of resources.
Hello guys!! So the map has finished but they waiting for new updates so they can update the map
There already have a footage and gameplay and video but the map still in the community, so we just have to until gabe or the developers of black mesa will accept
this map. #HazardCource
Actually, all the footage and videos are from an unfinished build. We’re still in alpha, though we’re quite close to reaching beta.
I know what we’ve shown off looks complete, but there are still areas and features we’re working on - don’t worry, once we’re done, we’ll release it, and not even Gabe would be able to stop us.
Hello, I’m kinda new here, this looks pretty cool and I was looking it up and came across this shit, WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT? I HATE IT WHEN DEVELOPER’S TRY TO COPY WHATEVER THE “FLAVOR OF THE MOTH” BULLSHIT IS. This was looking really cool before they fucking stuck memes in there because “omg so funny, muh first whorror game” JUST LOOK AT THIS SHIT
WOW SO EXCITING I GET TO LOOK AT FUCKING CAMERAS AND PUT A FUCKING BUCKET ON MY HEAD
I’d rather submit myself to a headcrab, WHERE’S MY TRAINING LEVEL?
Rezatlas, what’s exactly your problem with this? We needed to adapt to not having a choreographer, and decided a game based off FNaF would be more popular than anything else we could come up with under our constraints.
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
