When I heard that Black Mesa was to be released, I started the original HL1 again just for kicks and to get a feel for it again, taking my time to look at tiny details and imagining how it will look on Sept 14th.
I’ve tried not to look too much at the media, not wishing to spoil the surprise.
Has anyone else replayed HL vanilla for this very reason?
Most of us, I’m sure. I played from the top of We’ve Got Hostiles up through Lambda Core (on Hard) yesterday after starting the game a couple days before. Now it’s all fresh in my mind so I can drool at the shiny newness of everything in Black Mesa.
I love that Half-Life can still take me by surprise, though. You know the part in Surface Tension where you blow open a door with a cannon right after taking down (or avoiding) an Osprey? Then you go into the little hall, and there’s a mounted gun, and a bunch of Vortigaunts spawn? Normally, they just run into the gun, and I mow them down, but one of the little bastards hid this time. They’ve never done that before. So of course he took my by surprise, and when I killed him, his little friend teleported in behind me and killed me.
Yeah, that part really got me recently as every time I tried to make it to the gun (with only about 10 health), the buggers zapped me.
They lived to regret it though.
It’s been awhile since I’ve done a big playthrough of the Half-Life series (At least a couple of years… Probably when HL2 and Ep1 got achievements added back in 2010) so Black Mesa coming out was the perfect excuse to play through them again. I’ve done Uplink, Half-Life, Decay (PC mod version), Blue Shift (Blue Shift Unlocked mod version), Opposing Force and I just finished Surface Tension in Half-Life: Source.
Figured I’d play through both Half-Life and Half-Life: Source so the entire game would be really fresh in my mind when I play through Black Mesa.
I started on a game of HL a few days before the release date was announced. I stopped playing once I heard the announcement though.
I did a raw Hard difficulty playthrough from the beginning of WGH (the level where IMO things start to get really interesting) straight through to the start of FAF in about a few hours. Then I stopped since I was pretty worn-out.
It was especially fun since I hadn’t played Half-Life in a while, much less on Hard mode. Those HGrunts tended to rape me a ton. :fffuuu: Damn, I’d forgotten how fun they were to fight.
But I still remembered enough of the game’s random nooks, crannies, and misc. features and tricks that allowed me to win several battles and anticipate certain ambushes that I would have otherwise lost if I had just charged in, so that was cool.
I just finished up the last assassin fight of the game in Lambda Core, Gonna finish it up tonight
I haven’t. Thought about it, but I could walk someone through Half-Life, and possibly it’s sequels and add-ons without even watching. Didn’t want to spoil the new shiny-ness.
ARGH! 6 hours! Longest wait for computer game EV4R!
I replayed it over the last couple of days, from the beginning to Xen. I might continue to the end while I’m waiting, but since Xen isn’t in the release there’s no rush there.
I haven’t played Half-Life in some time, when I played it I had no steam account, I was gonna consider buying it and replaying it but since I found out about this remake I’m just gonna stick to replaying it though Black Mesa. Though I still wanna get to Opposing Force and Blue Shift.
I did it with half-life: source, just finished it today.
Yeh, I played the source version as well
Ah… I remember playing it on the crappiest computer ever… I finished it and it was soo awesome It was a long time ago so I didn’t even remember what happened.
Hl1 was the first game i installed on my new hdd. just for this reason
I still have the Half-Life WON version (version 1.1.1.0, latest patch before Steam). Using Pingtool I can still play online, CS 1.5, DMC, TFC and HL MP.
