Half-Life Series General Inquiries

 Good luck :stuck_out_tongue: . In all seriousness though, I think it was just VALVe’s knack for putting little scientific terms in with the game (Half-Life, Opposing Force, Blue Shift… that sort of stuff…)

Scientific terms? It’s the name of an actress! Her first name just sounds like ‘head-y’ and it’s a pet headcrab. It’s a simple pun.

Hedy Lamarr also held several patents including one for frequency hopping that are a key part of all wireless communications. At the time, wireless was still considered kind of magical. :freeman:

Did you (in EP2) singlehandedly cause the extinction of all the antlions on earth by killing the nest guardian?

Hardly. Killing a ‘guardian’ wouldn’t kill everything else, in the same way that Killing a normal Queen ant won’t kill every other ant in the colony.

We have no clue how vast the antlion population on earth actually is, but as far as HL2 and the episodes go, their spread is huge (seeing as how it extends all throughout Nova Prospekt, sections of City 17, and nearly all points in between)

Ehh fine, I’ll reword it then. ‘In relation to something scientific.’ Better?

There was a picture of her posted like three posts above yours.

I’m pretty sure the antlion colony you see in Episode 2 was a comparatively small one, seeing as there generally wasn’t an infinite number of antlions spawning.

I’d imagined that as well. They seemed to be solely based around the mines and didn’t venture beyond there. The antlions networks around the beaches that you see in Half-Life 2 were probably far more extensive though, as sand would be the perfect place to hide as it is easy to burrow into, form traps etc. There were, however, certain areas of sand in HL2 that didn’t contain antlions, and there were stretches of water that separated them so there were most likely separate colonies.

Long delay on this due to a cycling trip, but it’s an interesting point that you bring up, and one that I’ve been intrigued by. Certainly none of the rebels seem surprised at seeing Gordon. On the contrary, it seems as though they expected him to come. The only alternative idea is that it was all a coincidence, but that doesn’t check. As it stood at the end of HL1, Gordon had disappeared into another universe and beyond all contact, and although he evidently succeeded in destroying the Nihilanth, he must have been presumed dead.

Since only a couple of characters seem mildly surprised at Gordon appearing earlier than expected rather than actually being alive, I think it’s safe to say that the G-Man must have had something to do with it. I’ve long had a theory that the G-Man has appeared to certain key members of the Resistance, as he must have returned the Hazard Suit, as well as informed someone of Gordon’s condition and proof that he was alive. He would have most likely said that Freeman was due to return at some point in a week’s or so time span.

I always love this particular piece of graffiti as evidence that the Resistance knows of the G-Man and his influence. Whether is is the G-Man is a mystery, but I personally like to think it is. It can be seen in the final game in the Overwatch Nexus - easily missed in fact.

The only person that didn’t seem surprised to see Gordon was BARNEY.

The others, Eli and Keliener, they seemed taken back that he popped up. Kleiner showed astonishment, while even Eli commented on how Gordon hadn’t “changed one iota.” Mossman was surprised too.

Well yeah, he said ‘‘My, you haven’t changed one iota, how do you do it? BACK TO BUSINEEEEESSSS!’’. I thought it was odd that he didn’t really say anything about your unchanged apearance after 20 years.

“My God you haven’t changed one iota. How do you do it?”

That is saying something about his unchanged appearance right?

It is not the strongest of species that survive, but the one most responsive to change.

During “Route Kanal”, when you enter the wagon with the vortigaunt and the “railroad citizen” who send you ahead to the next station to get you “started on the right foot”, you can briefly observe that the vortigaunt is powering the tv set with his hand. The tv screen shows the g-man, who was obviously communicating with the vortigaunt until you showed up. The vortigaunt says to you: “We serve the same mystery!” Curious.

During your ride along the coastline, you come across a building protected by a thumper, where a couple of combine soldiers are stationed. It turns out as a watchpost, equipped with mounted binoculars or something like that. When you use the “observation device”, you can see it is focused on the rebel outpost where you meet Colonel Cubbage. If you observe closely, you see the g-man in conversation with someone, maybe the Colonel, for some time, before leaving the rebel outpost.

I regard this as evidence that the g-man has in fact been preparing everything for your arrival since the very beginning of the game. And he is probably doing so all the time in the background - watching you, maybe even guiding your steps and sending aid when you need it.

It is the Colonel.

Wait… you mean to tell me you only just figured that out?

:’(

Oh dear…

I’m not sure if the G-Man was actually conversing with the vortigaunt at that point. It could just have been a regular Breencast, and the G-Man manipulated it somehow that you saw him there without anyone else noticing, just to remind you that he was watching.

Someone made the suggestion that it was the G-Man who gave Cubbage the rocket launcher and warned him about the gunship, which I think is quite plausible.

Of course not! I figured that out the first time I played through the game - I just posted this so that others who might have overlooked some of those g-man appearances might make their own conclusions based on this.

I might look stupid - but I ain’t. Uh… I think. :retard:

But they knew he was alive at the very least, and for them to still be able to understand the situation they must have been told that he would arrive at some point. Neither Kleiner nor Eli seemed overly surprised to see Gordon. Kleiner just goes “My goodness, Gordon Freeman. I expected more warning,” whilst Eli simply goes “That’s not who I think it is, is it?” With a timespan of 10 years at the least and 20+ years at the most, you would have thought that if they hadn’t been warned that Freeman was coming, they would have said more than the equivalent of “oh it’s you.”

Yeah, like I said in my original post, they seemed more surprised with the timing of his return rather than the fact that he returned at all. Kleiner saying that he “expected more warning” backs that up a bit.

My theory is still that the Gman told someone, possibly Eli or Kleiner, that Gordon was coming back, but of course, since he’s the Gman, he was quite vague on when he would return.
