I found the original Half Life for PS2 at a garage sale for $1. Confession I have never played the original Half Life all the way through. Should I play the PS2 version, which has a few differences (mainly graphics), or purchase the original on Steam?
Steam.
Definitely.
Console version has to compensate for sucky controls with really annoying auto aim.
Try Steam version first.
ProTip : Half-Life on PS2 has keyboard/mouse support.
Play either one, but be warned the load times on PS2 are horrendous. Decay is also worth a playthrough if you have a friend. Don’t EVEN try by yourself. You’ll have your ass handed to you at the speed of sound by level7.

yea i used to have it for PS2. it wasnt bad. and decay is fun with a friend like the guy a few posts above me said. i thought it was interesting how they changed up the health chargers but i do prefer the steam version with a few HD upgrades.
Don’t sign up on this forum if you forgot to play HL1
The PS2 version was awesome imo. Some of you people are really non-innovative and can’t really deal with anything that’s not exactly what you like, but if you plan on playing Black Mesa, you might as well learn to play it on PC.
I think they’re both good, but the PS2 version was strangely funner to me. Mainly due to its original cheats (being able to play as vortigaunt).
But of course, the PC has far superior controls and massive custom-ability.
P.S. You can turn off the auto-aim on PS2 – everyone I know that played it did.
You can always get decay on pc just gotta download it.
but as to whether or not you can actually play with someone on it is another question entirely. Getting the dedicated server from steam doesn’t seem to work for some reason even though we followed it step by step and to the T. And the only other way to do it is by downloading hamachi which is especially bad if youre the average joe in terms of knowing about networks.
I say get it for steam. For sole reasons of no annoying split screen in decay. And plus you dont exactly need to be online to play Hl1. which isn’t a concern for ps2. But if anything were to happen to ps2 for reasons like dieng of age or scratched disc pc has you better covered. You can always buy an copy of game off of amazon and so on. The old non steam version anyway.
I played all the way through on ps2 didn’t have an issue with load times.
Please learn what innovative means before you go throwing it around like the buzz word that it is. There was nothing new, original or better about the PS2 port. It was just that a port and like many ports was inferior to the original platform’s version.
Anyways the PS2 version of HL was alright. The menu music kicked ass. But play it for PC if you can.
Half-life - steam = mods
In my opinion, the PS2 version is better when you apply the keyboard controls and don’t activate the auto-aim, but I’d say just wait for Black Mesa. It will blow the PS2 version away. IT WILL BLOW EVERYTHING AWAY. NOTHING SHALL STAND IN THE WAY OF OUR GLORIOUS DEVELOPER TEAM OVERLORDS.
Won version > Steam Version.
The menu was just so awesome.
And tilting and shadows and…
Time to adjust my monitor settings again. Everything’s got this rose-colored tint to it.
I think a few of you misunderstood what I meant. I have played most of the game before, I just haven’t finished it because of time issues. I have plenty of time this summer, so I was going to start it all over and play again.
So, the general consensus is that the PS2 version can be good when keyboard and mouse is used, but the Steam version is better because of mods? Can you install mods on the steam version? Thanks guys.
You can install mods on the Steam version. In fact, HL is compatible with ModDb’s download client (forgot what it’s called) so you don’t even have to fuss with manually installing most things. You can just download it and it instantly works. It’s pretty n00b friendly.
Alright thanks guys. I will purchase the Half-Life Anthology on Steam.
