It’s a rumor,but still
“The person close to Valve has confirmed that the development of Half-Life 3 is well under way, although much work remains. According to her, Half-Life 3 FPS will always be a very action-oriented, but with many RPG elements: open-world, quests and NPCs will be waiting for you! One of the inspirations the developers would also be the series of Elder Scrolls (Skyrim, Oblivion). This is very unexpected direction from Valve that we used to play rather linear but nevertheless excellent.”

…so what do you guys think about this possibility?
so much opportunity with that idea. Everything everyone has ever complained about could be given an appearance n some kind if shitty side quest.
“Gordon it’s me Adrian Shepherd! We need you to go kill the Cut HL1+2 enemies down at the old Manhack Arcade where your glasses fall off”
Can’t see this as being legit. If it was, it’s an incredibly risky strategy. I wouldn’t put my money on Valve doing this (well).
I could see this happening on some sort of spin-off release but on a direct sequel? Nah.
This would be better suited for a new IP.
Seems very unlikely to me. They’ve stuck with the FPS gerne since 1998, continued it with HL2, Ep1 and Ep2… why would they suddenly completely overhaul the gameplay of an award-winning game in the last episode?
It’s likely the development takes so long because they’re rebuilding the outdated Source engine. An updated engine will ofcourse give them more possibilties and larger environments, but Fallout3/Skyrim type of gameplay is out of the question for Episode 3, imho. It just would not make any sense.
But we live in a crazy world… maybe Gabe Newell is on meth or something…
lol? valve cant count to 3
-edit-
I’d have thought that if Valve wanted to do that kind of game they’d do it in a separate IP first. Still, if it is true (and at this point there are so many rumours there’s probably one saying it’s gonna be an RTS somewhere) then it might be interesting, depends how they handle it.
this is such a troll
Ummmm, no. The Half Life series is pretty much the complete opposite of open world. It’s the standard bearer for linear, tightly-scripted, story-lead gaming. What’s more, the HL universe just wouldn’t work for an open world game. It’s not a magical realm full of castles, dungeons and mythical creatures, it’s a depopulated, Eastern European wilderness. There’s no way Valve would throw away the central tenet of Half Life’s gameplay.
^ agree
Also, if they’re heading to the arctic, then open world would be kind of pointless, wouldn’t it?
half life itself is already a semi-open world kind of game, going full fledged open world would make it awsome
Too good to be true, but it would mean that ey’d be getting their map format/streaming shit together.
Get out of here, stalker.
We all know HL3 is going to be Half Life, but with the portal gun and portal style puzzles combined with the physics puzzles of the half life games.
It’s pretty obvious with the aperture science tie in and the appearance of the Borealis.
I will literally eat my pants if HL3 becomes an open world game with RPG elements, ergo it’s not going to happen, ever.
I really… Really hope this does NOT happen… my god…
How could it possibly be that bad? Half Life set the table for linear level design and well paced gameplay punctuated with scripted expository events. You know what shooters have been like that recently?
ALL OF THEM.
If Half Life came back as classic Half Life now, it would be in a wake of damn-near-identical campaigns gameplay wise. Hell, it started to get that way around the time EP2 was released.
It makes sense thematically. In half-life 1-2 Ep 2, Eordon / the player is under the G-man’s thumb. You have choices about how you’re going to do what he wants you to, but in the end you will do what he wants you to.
I always thought that the Tram / train at the beginning of HL 1 & 2 was a very deliberate metaphor for Gordon’s predicament; He is being rail-roaded. He’s a driving force in the narrative, but he’s not steering it.
But in Ep. 2 when (possible spoilers) the G-Man agrees to let Freeman go free as long as he sees Alyx to the white forest to deliver a message to Eli, there is no railroad sequence just a (moderately) open ended vehicle section.
Immediately after delivering the message the vehicle section for the final fight becomes very open ended, giving the impression that Gordon has a lot more choice in how he is going to do things from now on.
This could all be co-oincidence, or me simply reading what I want to into what I’m seeing in the games. But I’ve always assumed that in coming games, if we are truly free of G-man’s influence, it would involve a more open world, with more choices of how we’re going to do things, and when we’re going to do them.
A completely open world? I’m not sure about that. Too much of what half-life IS, is building specific scenarios for the player to experience. Ie: Ravenholm wouldn’t be nearly as fun if the player had the ability to “miss” the quest that gets them the gravity gun. It’s still fun, but that place is a gravity gun play ground for you to try out your new toy.
A completely open world would shatter those really strongly crafted moments. But a partially open one? Where there are say 4 Objectives, but 3 different paths to get to each one that are radically different from each other.
I can see that working with well with the half life formula, and adding a hell of a lot of replay value. It would also have the effect of making a section of a game 3x longer to make.
I dunno. I guess I’m saying I can see how it could happen. But also would not be surprised if the next half life iteration was more of what we’ve come to know and love.
Personally I think it is bollocks.
That said, whatever Valve does is going to be awesome, cause everything Valve does is awesome.
I don’t like the idea of RPG elements or side quests and all that jazz. Not in Half-Life at least. It doesn’t seem like it’d fit well, but it is Valve, so who knows, they might be able to make it work. Main story with the backstory tossed in here and there is how I like Half-Life, not playing a main story and having to play tons of extra stuff in between, or worrying about making sure my inventory or weapon accuracy or some other crap like that is correct. I also don’t think that it’s likely. At the very least not for a direct sequel, but holy crap the engine they’d have to run it. I’d love that.
This is a hoax I say, troll trolling in the middle of troll-land. If Gabe Newell would say it, than it’d be a different though.
Anyway I hope HL3 will come, and that it will be just like HL1 and HL2.
