I was just reading “the final hours of Portal 2” and one passage caught my attention:
I wonder what this means for Half-Life 3. I can’t really imagine it without a single player campaign… Although co-op would be great fun too for sure!

Well Alex has been your companion for all of the episodes so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a option to have a mate play as her. It could work in a similar manner to fear 3, although that wouldn’t work as well with Half-life’s free control narrative due to the fact if Alex needed to do something for the story to progress it would require a loss of player control.
Not again this shit. Portal 2 is not the last SP game by Valve. It’s probably the last game, where you are isolated and where you don’t meet any other human characters.
Gabe Newell later calls it Singleplayer+, the way, taking good things from the coop and adding them into the singleplayer mode, to make it a better experience.
There will be still singleplayer games by Valve, for gods sake.
All right, I guess I misunderstood that a bit… I’m thrilled to see what they have in mind for Half-Life 3 and other future games, whenever they think it’s about time to share some of their ideas.
sry if dug out an old topic that has been ranted about here before… ^^’
Half life has always been a primarily singleplayer game, it’ll be very very unlikely be a coop only game.
Even if it has coop feature, you can still play Left 4 dead alone and portal 2’s co-op is separate from the main singleplayer.
And so by how valve thinks, HL3 would probably still playable at singleplayer
Ugh, the key word in the quote is “ISOLATED”. As DiePoente says, it doesn’t have anything to do with co-op at all.

I believe this has already been discussed.
It has… months ago.
This.
OMG I am scared. I don´t have any friend that could enjoy the half-life saga. All my friends still thinking that Half-life it is not interesting ¬¬ . SO, if Valve make a half-life 3 with cooperative mode, I will not have anybody to play with him… and I will lost a lot of information. Therefor, Portal 2, was all that I´ve needed to test the co-op. Then, in my personal situation, I hope that Half-life saga still being only to one player (With death-match mode) . Of course, I am saying all this only in the case that Charli is right.
Forever alone
…There will be an SP mode, if not the only mode. Don’t worry your ass off about it.
It was a mistranslation from Valve-ese to media-ese. “no more isolated single-player” just means that there will be friendly companion NPCs that do more than talk, open doors, and get crushed by GLaDOS. You know, like Half-Life normally is, and not like in Portal how the player is the only human character in the entire friggin’ game.
The keyword is ‘probably’. So, most likely, but not set in stone. Personally, that ‘isolated single player experience’ is what made the HL series so popular. That sense that you’re all alone and EVERYONE hates you. Sure you can pick up a few allies here or there but they can’t follow you everywhere. In HL2, Alyx followed you around a little bit but left you most of the time. The episodes were a little different though, Alyx was with you most of the time. Well, I guess Valve has changed their thinking since the 90’s.
Half-fortress 2! Barney and Gordon, the adventures of the asskicking team! Includes the chick Alyx, the medic Kleiner (who can also summon de-beaked headcrabs) the dog and hordes of pissed aliens!
It wouldn’t be bad to play two rebels in Co-op mode who you will meet in the game later (like in Portal)
EDIT: “Single-player is great, but we also have to recognize that you have friends and wanted to have that connected as well."
sigh no it does not mean that, it means that valve games in the future will not be SP ONLY, they will all include an MP AAANNNND SP component
Forever if you have said that about my post. Forever.
I hope that
Thanks for the links, they explain it all ^^ guess I missed all the fuzz about this topic 4 months ago
yeah, some co-op play with two rebels sounds interesting. But I bet Valve has also something else mind. :3
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
