Hey, I’ve been trying to download some skins for HL2, but some of them don’t work. I extracted them to the hl2 folder, but they dont show ingame. Of all the weapon skins that I downloaded, the only ones that dont work are the ones with multiple install options(anims, alternate skins, etc.). Here are the links to the actual files:
I was under the impression that all models were in the
C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps"User Name"\half-life 2\hl2 directory.
I checked and sure enough they are. Is it a different case with animations?
EDIT: I’ve been able to download other weapon and hand skins succesfully, even ones from the same author. I’m having trouble with these NPC skins, Map Props, and Multi-animation/skinned weapon skins. I extract everything to the Half-Life 2\hl2 directory, but they still won’t show.
dude, edit button.
Also, some of the downloads may have different directorys. Make sure all the models are in the models directory and the proper subdirectory, same for sounds
eg, Sound/ambience.
I’m not an expert on HL2 skins, but make sure everything is where the originals are in the GCF.
You can’t just bung everything in your HL2 directory.
Get GCFScape (google it) it will allow you to explore your source engine files to see where they are in the directories.
For instance if it was a sound you would open source sounds.gcf and look for the sound you want to replace… do not replace the file in the gcf but simply use the same directory that the file uses in the gcf for where you put the replacement in your hl2 directory.
ie: if it was shotgun sounds you wanted to replace, you could look around source sounds.gcf and find this directory: hl2\sound\weapons\shotgun
then you would know to place the mod sounds in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\username\half-life 2\hl2\sound\weapons\shotgun
The same concept applies to skins, textures and models which are located in other .gcfs
But really… any skins/sounds/models should come with information on where to install them to.
The sound worked when I dumped it in the hl2 folder, but the skin didnt (Maybe it did, as the shotgun looks more hi-res than I remember it, but if it did work, it looks too much like the original and it is not the version I wanted to install.) This shouldnt be a problem though, because with most weapon skins, you can just dump them in the hl2 directory and the work just fine.
For both of those you have to unzip the files and choose the animation set or skin set, then install. Just unzip them to a folder on your desktop and set up what ya want, and then install. Zoidberg anims mean that it’s two handed, and VaLVe’s anims are standard one-handed anims.
Yes, I’m aware of that. For the pistol, I installed Zoidberg’s anims and the required folder and dumped them in the hl2 directory, and with the shotgun, I got all the required folders and the folded stock folder and dumped them in the hl2 bin. Nothing worked for the pistol, and I know for a fact that the sound worked for the shotgun. I’m not sure if any skin actually installed, but if it did, then it was the stockless one and not the folded stock.
I’ll do them up for you- you want Zoidberg anims, and folded stock shotgun, correct? I’ll set 'em up tonight and send em out tomorrow, if I can get 'net connectivity…
Wait, have ya looked at Pete’s spas-12? I personally think it’s way better… https://www.fpsbanana.com/skins/41194
Thanks man, These files just don’t want to work for me.
And yeah, I noticed pete’s shotgun after I tried uploading the one I have now, and I truly think it looks better, but I’m worried if i try to override the one I have now, I might fuck up the skin and have a glitched shotgun. The same thing happened when I tried replacing the scout sniper from CSS, and ended up with a glitched world model.
EDIT:
From teh gun thread…
I will give anyone that knows how to skin/model 1,000 internet points if they make a HL2 Crossbow reskin with the AR15 nailgun.
Well, just delete the stuff ya have already in the models folder, then replace it with my stuff. I’ll set it up tonight and upload tomorrow. Wait, which version of Pete’s spas do you want? I’ll add it in.
Or, I could just compile all the “Oldschool” HL2 gun models with some uber-res skins of everything else and some good H.E.V hand reskins if you want…
Finally, can’t help ya with the AR15. I have mad unskillz at modelling.
Thanks. I have most models replaced with something, except for crowbar, both pistols, and the shotgun. I also reskinned the hands and the combine. The Nailgun is mostly a joke, but it would be sick as hell if someone made a model out of it . For the record, I would like PETE’S shotgun, not the one i suggested, with folded stock and zoidberg for the pistol. Thanks a lot man. I can usually do this stuff, but apparently these files dont want to be dumped into the hl2 folder. The others do, and i have proof at the bottom.
Also, I tried downloading some reskins of miscelaneous posters, crates, etc. I have no idea where to put them. Suggestion? Thanks for anyone who helps.
Ok, got everything other than the vending machine, as my machine was spammed in the process of dling it. I’ll upload it to rapidshare and send ya a link.
There used to be a really snazzy high-res version, but I can’t find it any more. There are only two on FPSbanana: hands (bleh) and a caution-tape covered grav gun (srsly?)
