Half-Life 2 glowing gun sights

Hi, I’m pretty new to texturing, so I’ve got a question:
How could I make the sights of a gun texture glow in the dark?
Hope this isn’t a stupid question, I don’t have much texture experience and I’d like to build my knowledge

Open the texture file of the sight, create a new layer and fill it with black. Paint white areas where you want the model to glow(the white-marked part
of the texture will glow). Delete the texture layer and save it as a vtf. This will be your glow texture.

In the VMT for the sight’s actual texture:

“$selfillum” 1
“$normalmapalphaenvmapmask” 1
“$selfillumtint” “[3 3 3]”
“$selfillummask” “file path of glow texture goes here”

you can also add the illummask as alpha channel to your bastexture

Looking forward to seeing the turnout. Maybe when you get the hang of it, do a bit more glowing texture on the weapons for an aesthetic look.
