I find that I get almost the exact same graphical quality when using OpenGL vs Direct3D, but about two to five times better framerate.

Also, I’ve always run HL1 at 1440x900 and opengl, so the high resolution isn’t really impressing me at all.

I don’t like most of the hi-res texture packs they make for old games. Either the new textures just look wrong on the old style geometry or the texture artists are idiots and just make bigger versions of the old textures without updating its style. Only in a few rare occasions, the new hi-res textures actually improve the overall visuals of the game (ex: Deus Ex hi-res pack).

That’s why I prefer old games to look old. It just adds to the style.

Besides, you did it for the Source version. Which supports textures several times bigger than the HL1 engine could ever support.

Tbh, a game that is old and has been graced with the attention of an HD pack, generally is a good game.
