GTX 480

i must admit im not an nvidia fan at all lol, overpriced in my opinion… il be going ATI this time (again :stuck_out_tongue: ) all tho just building a budget rig atm so going for 5770… but will upgrade hopefully later on to a 5970

Ever since i had an FX5200 (supposedly 256mb my arse iv seen 64 mb cards work faster lol) i have never gone back but then taht was like over 7 years ago now i think :S

Like I mentioned earlier, I just bought a 5870 in mid march for $370. It replaced my non-OCed, but faulty 8800GT. I probably may have been able to return it, but never looked into it so that’s my fault. Luckily it wasn’t too much of an inconvenience, it still works and I got two years out of it. I have always bought Nvidia and this is my first ATI card. Im certainly not an ATI fanboy. I was still planning on buying a GTX480 but began hearing that the launch models would only be like 10% faster…IMO not worth paying $100+ more. Oh and I have had ZERO issues with ATI drivers…ATI’s drivers have improved but yes, they are not as good as Nvidia’s. The difference really doesn’t matter though.

I think once Fermi matures it will be better…but THIS THREAD is about the GTX480…loud, hot, and expensive for small gains. Granted, you could always throw on a after market cooler, thats just more expensive. Not to be rude, but your the fucking fanboy interpreting all of this as a rant on Nvidia. Take your “newegg user review” and GTFO.

Im not really going to mention the 5970 because its dual gpu, crazy expensive, and I believe still hard to find.

So…does anyone here have a GTX480?

POWAH FROM TEH PEOPLE!!! (And their obtuse oversupplies…)
But then again, I am definitely an AMD fanboi through and through.
I also do not want to buy harvested parts. No 5850 for me, which brings to mind, when will nvidia have all 512 cores working?

Well, anyone hear any rumors about the Nvidia 5xx? It looks quite likely that they will get hammered by ATI again this winter, since the HD 6xxx are supposed to be rolling in the second half of the year…

Are you fucking kidding me? How is the ATI Nvidia relationship anything like the PC Mac relationship? That doesn’t even make sense. And NVIDIA haven’t been the standard. The playing field has been tipping back and forth between the 2 for years now.

So, anybody been having rolling blackouts recently? :stuck_out_tongue:

I can’t imagine how uncomfortably hot a GTX 480 SLI setup would make your room.

I think I might just substitute one of these for my space heater. It sure puts out an adequate amount of heat!

I have a 7800GS that does that job quite well, I would hate to experience one of these…

Yeah but wut about the summer when it gets to like 93F outside (for me atleast) then wut are u gonna do?

The shittiest card from nvidia evaaaa.

Well, I’ve got a GTX 260 and I’m happy with it.

Yes it’s true that the 480 hasn’t been added to that list yet.

I will not buy another gpu for at least 4 years I’m happy with my gtx 280 sli setup, and also I did not buy them at full price when they came out. The computer store I bought them from was selling 9800gx2’s at the time and when the cards where coming that day they offered me two gtx 280’s at the same price as 2 9800gx2’s. Also the gtx 480 sounds hella hot, I wonder if any computer case on air cooling will be able to cool that puppy. I think you’d probably need water cooling for that card.

Not a fanboy but I’ve allways used nvidia…(starting to wonder)
I just bought a gtx 275 after burning up my 8800 ultra that I had for about 3 years, (heat) and I do clean the case out…I dont know if its heat but the 275 craps out after about 10 or 11 minutes…
I’m gonna try ATI next.
Dell XPS 720 750 watt power supply…
Doesnt work on hl2-ep1 or ep2 mostly…

WRONG. In fact the worst card from Nvidia would most likely come from their weakest lineup, the FX series. The shittiest cards from nvidia are some of the early FX cards.

Fermi (GTX400) has potential, wait til it matures and the prices lower. Nvidia is playing catchup because they are late. Radeon 6000 should be here in 2011, so it will be interesting to see what ATI’s refresh will be in the meantime.

More interesting will be the answer Nvidia will have to ATI’s 6000 series in the form of a Fermi refresh.

I hope nvidia can pick up there game. I’m planning on a new computer in a year and a half. At this rate It’ll be an Intel ATI computer.

This has already been said, but I feel like it needs to be said again: the 5970 uses 2 cores.

the fermi thing could probably still hold true as being the fastest, if you judged the 5970 as being two cores.

But in the near future, I see myself getting a 5870 more than anything.

Yeah and it still beats fermi in games that only use 1 of its two cores.

Fermi is a wip card. Kind of a prototype.
There will be new 400 series cards in the summer hopefully.
They will have 256 shaders and will be faster than the hd5750 hd5770 and hd5830
called gts 4xx.

Hopefully they can get the heat situation under control, because I don’t want to get a really hot card in 3 or 4 years.
