Maybe because some rifles do use pistol/revolver rounds?
Im looking at a lever action rifle and choices are .357 Magnum or .45 LC.

Thing is, shotgun guys actually run up towards you in ST.
which is quite stupid, but that kinda furthers up the point being made.
Kinda defeats the purpose of calling it a rifle, no?
Actually they are rifles, but enlighten me though on why they are not rifles by the very definition.
Definitions are blurry. Technically a “rifle” is a two-handed weapon fired from the shoulder that has rifling in the barrel. So then by that logic, an SMG with barrel rifling would also be a rifle, despite being an SMG by the definition that it fires pistol rounds, no?
Riddle me this.
Why do you not call a submachine gun (machine pistol) an assault rifle?
The main thing is though, lever action rifles using pistol rounds is not common practice and is an abomination in general.
Therefore moot point is moot.
A SMG is a rifle that shoots full auto and uses pistol cartridges. The Uzi, the Scorpion, etc. They are all classified as SBRs and SMG
s. They have barrels under 16" in length so they are Short Barreled Rifles and they are SMG`s cause they use pistol rounds and shoot full auto.
A lever action rifle using pistol rounds has a barrel over 16" so its not a SBR, and it does not shoot full auto so its not a SMG. It is plainly a rifle that uses handgun cartridges for ammunition.
A SMG is typically a SBR and shoots pistol rounds where an “assault rifle” is not a SBR and it does not shoot pistol rounds.
Oh btw, I forgot to update my post to cover this quote. In reality lever action rifles using pistol rounds is very common. Theres only ever been 4 true rifle calibers ever used on lever action rifles since they showed up in the 1800`s.
Most common calibers for Lever Action rifles are : .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, .41 Magnum, .444 Marlin, .45-70, .45 Colt, .32-20 Winchester, .35 Remington, .22 caliber rimfire and .300 Savage.
Rifle rounds out of the above are the .444 Marlin, .45-70, .35 Remington, .300 Savage. The .32-20 is like the .22 a low powered cartridge ment for small game was used in both rifles and pistols so not a “true” rifle cartridge.
4 out of 12 different caliber lever action rifles were true rifle cartridges tells me that lever action rifles using rifle rounds is not common practice and is the abomination.
Carbine =/= rifle.
US legal designations are and were always retarded.
Watch out, CoD-experienced people talkin 'bout them rifles.
I prefer the SMG, more nostalgic value to me even though it does seems weird that the army would fight using MP5s and not M16/ M4.
THe M16 Carbine has a 15" barrel and uses rifle rounds. But it is also classified as a SBR and to legally own a milspec Carbine you need to have the proper paperwork and go through channels to own a SBR. Commercial M16 Carbine barrels are typically 16 - 18" where the M16 barrel is 20".
How might I know this? I built a M16-A1 with a milspec 20" pencil barrel and working on a custom M16 prototype build currently using the same 20" barrel. Thought of the 18" barrel but the mock up looks weird.
lol Well can you point these CoD experienced people I like to make a list so I dont talk too technical for them.
Guess what? Pistol with a shoulder stock may also be called an SBR. Does it make it a rifle? Hell fucking no.
As said before, SBR is a retarded legal designation coined primarily for ripping some more money off you.
Eh? I would say that a Carbine is a shortened Rifle by definition. It meets all the conditions of being a rifle.
The fuzzy part that always got me was the definition of SMG versus Rifle, since they do overlap quite a bit. If you call an SMG a “carbine” then that puts it firmly as a subcategory of Rifle though.
Anyway this thread is devolving into an off-topic flamefest, I can feel it. Time to leave before it gets too ridiculous. :ninja:
Actually a pistol with a shoulder stock by law is classified as a SBR a Short Barrel Rifle. It still has rifling cause pistols have rifled barrels just like rifles and some shotguns do. It just has a barrel under 16" so it is classified as a SBR like the Uzi and Scorpion. They are classified as SBR`s and not pistols because they have integrated stocks that makes them more like a rifle than a pistol. If you had a Uzi with out the stock then it would be called a Machine Pistol a fully automatic pistol. It wouldnt meet the qualifications for a SBR cause it doesnt have a stock.
Except the long barrel which is needed for higher bullet velocity, which in term was the entire purpose of creating a rifle firsthand.
Did you miss the part about american legislation being stupid?
Oh? I dont think its a flame fest just yet. Its just simmering at this point and could turn into trolling or flaming. But I rest assure knowing that I am stating facts that are some what on topic.
lol the point of creating a rifle was to extend its accuracy over a musket. A musket was only accurate to about 50 yards. A lever action rifle with a pistol cartridge would be accurate to about 100 yards which is still better than a musket. The long barrel was always there for power the accuracy was pathetic and the rifling was created to spin the projectile to provide stability to increase accuracy at longer ranges.
No wheres in the history of guns does a rifle have to have a certain barrel length. It just has to have rifling to increase accuracy. A brown bess some could call a rifle cause its the same length as a rifle but it has no rifling so thus its a musket not a rifle.
But how is that stupid? You have a pistol with a stock just like a rifle and a shot gun and the pistol has a rifled barrel so its a SBR. What is stupid about that? The stock effectively turns the pistol into a shoulder weapon which is the same as any long arms.
So pistol = rifle?
P.S. And yeah, rifle = p.much musket with rifling. Carbine = a longarm similar to but shorter than a rifle or musket.
Carbine actually predates the rifle.
If it has a stock then its a SBR. Otherwise its not a rifle cause its a side arm not a long arm/shoulder arm.
Once a Musket got rifling it was no longer called a musket but was now a rifle.
A Carbine is a rifle with a short barrel and if its under 16" legally it is known as a SBR. It can not earn the title SMG because it does not meet the requirements.
Brown Bess Musket = 75" Over All Length
M1891 Rifle = 51.5" Over All Length
M1891/90 Rifle = 48.5" Over All Length
M44 Carbine = 40" Over All Length
The M44 Carbine was created by taking a M1891/90 rifle and cutting the barrel down by 8.5"
To put it you could say all Carbines are rifles but not all rifles are carbines.
A Scorpion or a Uzi for instance they use pistol cartridges, they have a foldable stock, and they are class III or full auto weapons. The foldable stock removes the side arm classification and makes them now shoulder arms or long arms. The short pistol like barrel being less than 16" makes them a SBR by definition and their full auto capability using pistol cartridges earns it the classification SMG. The PPSh-41 was built from the start as a rifle by cutting down M1891/30 barrels in half and making two PPSh-41 barrels out of one M1891/30 rifle barrel. This SMG was fed 7.62x25 Tokarov catridges like my Vz Cz.52 pistol is and has all wood furniture. This SMG is also a SBR with its 10.5" long barrel.
Theres no easy way to put it like I did with Carbines vs Rifles. Cause you cant say all SBRs are SMG
s cause I could buy a semi auto Scorpion which still uses pistol rounds and it has a barrel less than 16" so its just a SBR. I could say all SMGs are SBR
s but not all SBRs are SMG
s. The problem with that though is there might be just one SMG out there that has a barrel length of 16 or more and I dont want to make assumptions on that.
Eh, yeah, sure, whatever, american legal definitions for regulating civilians.
