It’s impossible to kill the first headcrab you encounter without unnecessary backtracking. As you don’t have your crowbar yet.

They should add a piece of debris about the size of a barrel so we can crush the crab with it.

One thing that always bugs me in source games is that when you’re in water and surface by holding jump, there’s an excessive amount of camera bobbing when surfaced. I know this is probably a part of the movement system for jumping out of water, but when simply holding jump and not moving, the camera jerks making it hard to aim. I’d love it if that were stopped, or decreased to some degree.

You know, one of the coolest things about Half-Life 1 was, that it did NOT display "Secrets: / Items: / Kills: " percentages at the end of levels, unlike Doom or Quake. It was one more way to emphasize that this is not an ordinary shooter, but rather an action movie with a CLEVER hero.

I don’t want every time on the end of a level because half-life is an on-going story.
What I just suggested is when you press ESC there would be a button (in the menu) and it would say “Score” if you click it then you see your personal stats.

Achievements can go suck it. The “fun ones” are heinously less immersive than something like a stat screen, having players do stupid shit in a game to get their little badges.

If they’re keeping track of the stat to “Kill 12 bullsquids”, just tell me the f-ing body count instead. STALKER had a very nice way of keeping count of things in the PDA, and going to the main menu would be a swell way of portraying how much action the player has gone through. I like the idea.

And trust me, you’ll be curious as to how much damage on health and armour you’ve actually taken during the course of the game. The shots from, hits with, and kills by every weapon would be another swell set of stats. One could even count the damage inflicted by every weapon. All of these have an extremely low overhead in terms of storage space and processing.

Let’s even count the number of footstep sound effects played, so we can multiply that by the distance of 1 pace and get the total distance traversed.
