Get Black Mesa on Steam! We can do it!

And there’s a frequently-quoted statement from Valve indicating that the 100,000 votes isn’t actually a hard requirement, nor is being the highest ranking title on Greenlight. Valve also said that number is “going to change during the first few days/weeks since we don’t know what kind of traffic to expect.” It’s right there in the quote, which is the first answer in the developer’s section of the Greenlight FAQ.

I already knew the entry requirements and voting would be adjusted by valve since greenlight is new, thanks for the quote tho.

I would still recommend valve offers a “top 25” or “most popular” listing, someplace, in greenlight. Every steam user has unlimited voting power, so highlighting the top X games has zero harm, it only SAVES TIME. If users are unnecessarily voting for popular games, that’s valve’s fault for not distributing it through steam earlier. Like I said, there are over 700 titles on greenlight, thats a lot to look at.

This is probably all a moot point because valve will eventually improve greenlight.

In fact, BM is an excellent game to use as a guinea pig. This mod has had extensive coverage and has been on the net for years. I think BM is the first “amateur” production to gain this much pre-release attention. I am willing to bet that every HL fan has heard of BM so, given the large fanbase, greenlight is perfect for BM. BM will, by valves intention or not, set (perhaps too high) the bar for greenlight candidates.

IMO, I do not think any future greenlight candidate will ever tally as many votes as quickly as BM. Greenlight popularity will be a huge factor.

I bet there are thousands of people who have busy lives that havn’t checked this site in years who won’t even realize BM is coming out until it is actually out, maybe even months after it actually comes out. You’ve all seen the forum population swell with people like me joining. I bet that for every lurker who has joined in the last 7 days there’s another 20 people who havn’t thought to check back here for a few years. It would be an easy thing to miss, even with the media coverage of it.

I think we’ll see the voting grow like a big snowball once Black Mesa is actually released. As time progresses, more people will rediscover this mod/game.

September 14th ==> new giant news media hype ==> 100% on Greenlight in a few hours

I hope.

I´m pretty sure that with the release date right around the corner and it being by far the most popular game on Greenlight, chances are it won´t be long before Valve contacts the team if they haven´t done so already. What exactly they have to say remains to be seen. I´m still a bit sceptical honestly, it being a free mod and a re-imagining of Valve´s own work, but fingers crossed no matter what. Valve is known for being on good terms with the modding community.
However, I´m almost a hundred percent sure it won´t be on Steam on release. There´s still certification and all that other legal stuff to consider.

For now, I´m just hyped for the game itself.

I know that valve has been nothing but supportive of BM. There are zero legal issues to contend with. It is highly unlikely it will be removed from greenlight/steam.

Legal issue or not. Valve is a huge company and they will definitely need to examine the game before they put in on Steam. It´s one thing for them to have Half Life mods outside of Steam but for them to release a remake of their most popular brand on their own platform, they will have to make sure it doesn´t shed any bad light on the good name of Half Life. I doubt there´s anything they will find, I have absolute trust in the BM devs, but Valve will want to be sure and I´m just saying that could take a while. Especially since Greenlight is as new as it is.

I agree, we have no idea how long it will take to show up for download on steam, but it will definitely be available one day.

Nope.

There are constantly people popping up on here, on the greenlight page, and on the facebook saying how they just discovered Black Mesa. And for each person who comments that, there are probably 100 more people who didn’t comment but also just found it. And then many many more who still haven’t found it.

There won’t be legal ‘issues’ per se, but Valve is a company and companies go through paperwork for EVERYTHING they do. While I’m sure the team has zero issue with Steam handling their original content, Valve is still going to want to have everything in writing just so their butt is covered. So yes, there is still plenty of legal stuff to consider. That’s how the world works.

Valve said in 2005 or something that they would prefer mods to be original and not recreating old games, same time as they asked the team to remove “source” in this mods name I think, so Valve has not been all positive :stuck_out_tongue:

But I think they will try to use this mod for something, its way to god to be overlooked, and HL1 look way more outdated now than in 2005 so BM would be a way of making the HL series complete for for new gamers.

They posted about and congratulated Black Mesa in a news post back when they won most anticipated mod on MODDB in 2007 or 2008, I don’t remember what year. Stating people at the company were looking forward to the mod.

That´s the quote you mean. I´ve heard people say several times though that valve did mention BM in a positive light quite often. Anyone still have links to other such quotes?

Yes I know, its not like its it hasn’t been mentioned before, I just think some people may be reading in to much… my previous post was an response to an earlier post about Valve being only positive to BM.

Guys… it seems like the percentage counter has been fixed

44%.

i was expecting a lot more but… meh… eventually we will get there

Yeah it probably won’t be hitting 100% in a while. Not that it matters, but even being on top and noticed still requires Valve to get in touch with them in order to put the game on Steam.

Knowing how Valve is, I don’t expect to see that for a while. SO, looks like torrent it is for me!

… UNLESS Valve has already contacted the devs and they’re just keeping it under wraps until preparations are finalized… :ninja:

Valve has said employees can pretty much work on any project they choose and at any time. Hopefully some will get inspired and get on it soon.

So, I just noticed that we are looking at +1% every five hours or so right now, of course this rate will probably decrease, but if it doesn’t, we would need 11 days and 16 hours to reach 100%. There’s one more thing though, after the release we will probably get more fans and voters, and with that we may actually keep this rate, or even increase it, so assuming what I just said happens, this would mean we’d see Black Mesa in Steam before the end of this month, cool huh?

Also, if all this happens, I don’t really think Valve should change the amount of votes needed to get a game into Steam, I mean, I’d like Greenlight to keep a really high standard of approved games quality, and it should be really hard to get greenlit. It does need a top 10 though.

Of course, all these assumptions could be entirely wrong

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
