GDC Presentation of Portal 2's original plans

Chet Faliszek and Eric Wolpaw (Both story authors at Valve) have made a presentation about the original plans and early concepts of Portal 2.

They talk about the different, original beginning, original endings, cut competetive multiplayer, the several other characters that should’ve appeared in the early Portal 2 (Like the Morgan Freeman sphere), changes about the game overall, why they cut Chell, GlaDOS and portals from the original plans for the sequel and much more.

It’s one hour long, but really interesting (and funny too), as it also shows, how Valve actually works. (With their playtesting and how they work on their projects)

And there is an Q&A at the end of the presentation.

I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks! That was very interesting.

~30 mins in, great so far.

I liked the part where they admit people give too much credit to their writing skills.

I liked all parts of it. Too bad they didn’t tie in a harddisk recorder to record the presentation output, and then make a nice montage combining the speakers and presentation. The camera shifting is very annoying, to say the least. Especially the part where you miss an entire video because the camera operator wasn’t paying attention.

That’s me at 47:15 asking the really nervous sounding question about the Greek mythology references in the story, as you can probably tell I was quite nervous. Was a really awesome talk overall though, glad I attended it.

Why was you nervous? I mean you haven’t asking about HL3 or something

He didn’t seem that nervous. Seemed like there was some difficulty phrasing the question.

Man, for a moment I thought they were actually gonna explain F-stop.

Morgan Freeman sphere?

Valve, you disappoint me. (by not including this)

Anyone else see those two as Alan and Steve from ‘The Hangover’?

I love watching these.

I probably should have written the question down before I got up to ask it haha. I had it phrased in my head but when It was my turn to speak my braid just decided to derp.

Yeah big problem. Try to ask that question when you are a stutterer like me.

lol, " ehhh… ehh… ehh" I would stutter when I face VALVe dudes too

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
