What FPS and Third person games have good stories to them?
It’s all a matter of opinion, but here’s my list (in no particular order).
• Half-Life Series
• Bioshock Series
• Spec-Ops: The Line
• Singularity
• Borderlands 2 is decent (not Borderlands 1)
• Metro 2033 (I think it’s free right now)
• The Deus Ex Series
• Bulletstorm, despite it’s short length and immaturity, is quite the brotastic adventure
• Dead Space series is fine
I have a couple honorable mentions that aren’t necessarily great when it comes to the story, but are fine singleplayer games.
• The Crysis series
• The Serious Sam Series
Halo, Gears, Mass Effect, Half-Life series…
Come to think of it, a good number of mainstream FPS games are pretty story-driven.
EDIT: See list above.
I’ll reiterate Spec Ops: The Line. Halo’s a great series but I find myself much to lazy to concern myself with all the lore. Bastion has a fantastic story as well.
Edit: The first time I finished Minesweeper, I cried. Such a touching story.
Okay, yeah, that’s everything I was going to list.
I really liked Metro 2033’s story, myself. The setting in particular is fantastically moody and creepy, and really carries across the idea of a handful of survivors eking out a living in the decaying tunnels of the Moscow metro.
The alternate ending was nice too.
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Grand Theft Auto 4
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
F.E.A.R.
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Alan Wake
Yeah, not all of those are shooters, but they all have something interesting to bring to the table, story-wise.
Crysis 2 had a surprisingly decent story as well.
Walking Dead game it’s a licensed property but has its own unique story.
thanks a lot for the replies!!!
Is the game “I Am Alive” any good?
What? They’re well written. Persona 4 in particular had a ton of funny writing, and the side story social links managed to even be poignent in some parts. Plus the late game with the Heaven dungeon and who got kidnapped to make it, and it’s immediate aftermath, was incredibly emotional.
GTA4’s main strength for me was the narrative and strong characterization for Niko Bellic. As crazy as the story missions got, and as many terrible decisions the game forces you to make, I stuck with it because dammit, Niko is a great character.
Enslaved- Andy Serkis. Come on, dude. Andy Serkis is the shit. And considering that the story managed to engage me quite well the whole way through, exploiting it’s post-apocalyptic setting and art direction to the fullest, and that twist ending! It’s a good game, if a bit short.
One does not simply finish minesweeper.
On subject: Unreal has an excellent story, if you feel like piecing it together. Not to mention some seriously kick ass gameplay for the time and, in some cases, today.
Also:
Fear 1, 2
Deus Ex (original)
Half Life series
Legend Of Zelda Majoras Mask and Windwaker
Final Fantasy VII - Crisis Core
Metal Gear Solid - Peacewalker and the original
Condemned - Criminal Origins
Red Dead Redemtption
Dead Rising 1, 2
Mass Effect 1, 2
Fallout 3 and New Vegas
Resident Evil (original one) and 4
Metro 2033
God Of War (all of them)
Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway (for all your “Band Of Brothers” needs")
That’s all I can think of right now.
Unreal is good but the story wasn’t anything revolutionary.
Disclaimer: I haven’t actually finished it yet.[/SIZE]
It’s Dotard.
Also where’s the love for The Darkness 1 and 2?
Also both Riddick games are pretty well done imo.
Knew I was forgetting something. Oh, and the Max Payne Trilogy. Love me some good noire.
Also, I found Unreal to be excellent in the story department simply because the pieces of info you find help stimulate your imagination, creating little sub stories.
Two good Noires and a Die Hard Film to be more accurate.
It’s a good Die Hard though, so no worries.
Yeah, the universal translator was a really clever idea as a means of storytelling.
Haha never thought of the third as a Die Hard film. But it’s fitting.
And it was clever, and though it didn’t catch well with me at first, I liked the audio logs of return to na Pali after awhile. And Unreal 2 : Thd Awakening was halfway decent too.
I made my previous list assuming we were talking PC exclusives, but if you have a PS3 I highly recommend the Uncharted, Resistance, and InFamous series’ as well. For Xbox, see Halo and Gears (already mentioned) and for Wii… uhm, I’d say Metroid Prime series but that’s about it as far as shooting things in first-person goes.
Definitely agree with Unreal, but only if you are ok with discovering the story, if you want it told directly to you it doesn’t exactly do that so.
Also, the old TES games pre-oblivion have pretty decent stories if you’re ok with RPG-FPS games.
And The Thief series has an excellent story.
