Gabe Newell in Forbes Magazine

I happen to come across a Forbes article about Gabe Newell, Valve, and Steam. It’s a very nice article and it’s good to see Gabe and Valve getting some recognition.
Warning: Crazy Episode Three theory here, read at your own risk
But there is one part of the article that struck as odd…

Now this is just a stupid theory, and thinking it over, it DOES seem pretty stupid. But when I first read about the surgery, the first thing that came to mind that it seemed like a reason Episode Three has taken so long. While I’m not saying it is THE reason, it seemed like it would affect it somehow. But like I said, reading it over some more, it just wouldn’t make sense that this would slow development. I just felt like sharing this along with the article.

Gabe Newell doesn’t have that much input in the creation of games. He’s more of a “big picture” guy. He plans where Valve is going next in terms of general ideas and concepts.

I’ve never heard about that transplant. Sauce or BS.

edit: the article is linked on wikipedia so I guess it’s legit

This. I mean, it’s good for him that he’s got new eyes (I think he’s got a bad back too) but it really does have fuck-all to do with EP3.

Even if his eyesight did affect HL2 episodes development, it would have had effect on Episode 2 rather than 3 since his transplants happened at around the end of Episode 2 production.

But yeah, he doesn’t have that much of an impact on the games themselves IIRC.

To go even one step further, in his recent interview with the (generally terrible) Steamcast, he said that he doesn’t even really come up with many business ideas any more. He puts all his energy into hiring the smartest people he can, and then he focuses on getting them the resources they need to be successful. What a fucking great place to work.

I remember hearing about that surgery in the, " Final days of half-life 2 " book. Episode 3 has to be amazing, so I guess they’re taking their sweet time aswell.

EDIT TO SAY SOMETHING RELEVANT:
I have heard of Fuchs Dystrophy, and cornea transplants are actually pretty common these days.

Wut?

In a video tour of valve’s new hq, you can see Gabe’s sitting on an exercise ball at his desk, which I hear is good for back pain.

Wut?

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
