G-man

(upon reading this, it seems as though I’m being harsh or mean… this isn’t my intention! It’s never my intention… Internet flame wars are the crowbar to my headcrab!)

@Fancy Pants

Because talking in depth about things that definitely WON’T happen isn’t really constructive to the topic at hand… it’s pretty much the same as me saying “Wouldn’t it be cool if G-man shot lasers out of his asshole, gained his powers by eating antlions and actually works for Gordon’s biological father (who incidentally was Eli Vance)”… There’s scope for a mildly humorous thread in coming up with “what-if” scenarios that’ll never happen, but it doesn’t help us figure out who the G-man is, which is the purpose of this thread.

Back on topic, and this sounds almost as far fetched as Fancy Pants’ idea, but has a basis on evidence, but despite it being jokingly mentioned earlier in the thread, I’m starting to seriously be open to the idea that the G-man is a character from the LOST universe, and to a more intriguing degree, LOST and Half Life might also exist within the same universe. Let’s look at the facts!

  1. Valve and the writers of LOST are on friendly terms, reputedly meeting up quite a lot.
  2. LOST references Halflife on numerous occasions (with G-man esque imagery, a boat called “our mutual friend”, etc).
  3. Halflife references LOST several times during episode 2 (with the hatch, and also the LOST number sequence on one of the screens).
  4. Both franchises allude to similar topics and plot mechanics (ie, Time travel/Time dilation)

Now onto more speculative stuff:

I’m sure by now most of you are aware of whatsinthebox.nl which launched in March this year (seemingly a viral… a couple of cinematic quality videos using both assets and references to LOST and HALF LIFE ( https://babel-research.eu/witb/stream/ ), and a worryingly deep rabbit hole of clues implying something big)… The site is associated with a fake website alluding to “Babel Group” ( https://babel-research.eu/ )which lists sponsors/associated firms such as Black Mesa, Aperture Science and Hanso foundation. The quality and depth of this suggests something a little more than a fan made project.
A common theory is that this alludes to something that will tie the two franchises together… Catch up with the discoveries of other internet users here ( https://wikibruce.com/2009/04/a-big-box-of-babel-research/ ) and see if you can make any sense of it…

And THAT, gentlemen, is how you throw out a seemingly insane idea whilst still staying relevant to the topic

Lol, if these two franchises are linked i’m gonna seriously look into wether or not I can sue valve, there must be a loophole somewhere.

I could somehow plead they turned me insane with their change from awesomeness to the worst writing in forever.

lol, yeah, I never followed LOST, from what I saw it was just really lame, and in all likelihood this isn’t “what’s in the box”, but I’m just throwing it out there.

LOST is good, and Half Life is good, and What’s in the Box is good, but the three are not connected except for superficially. What’s in the Box was a student project, I believe.

I dunno… there’s too much depth to be a mere student project (I’m in my final year of university now and this is beyond anything I’ve been asked to do (in scope).

What’s more, the guy who takes reference is Tim Smit (which is a palindrome… look around the sites and you’ll find a few) who, according to wikipedia was moderately successful in the music industry and was one of the main funders of the Eden Project near Cornwall, UK. There’s a suspect interview where he’s interviewed about the project though he doesn’t really confirm or deny anything.

there is most certainly some level of connection between halflife and lost, even if it is just an easter egg/mutual tribute, but the huge web of conspiracy that can be unearthed from digging around “what’s in the box” suggests something more… and I’m certainly open to the idea that the video is somewhat official, baring in mind Valve is in business with EA, who in recent years have been going overboard with elaborate virals.

If you haven’t already done so, I suggest looking at the above wikibruce site… the sheer quantity of stuff people have dug up should give credence to my belief that this is something more than a student project/CGI showcase/hoax…

Well everyone probably knows that there’s no way to figure out who he is until the next game or maybe even games after that, and it’s fun to theorize, even if we know it’s not true.
And I don’t think anyone could honestly tell you that they think an asshole laser g man wouldn’t be awesome.

Let’s all theorize about G-man being a turtle. We all know it’s not true, but let’s talk about it

My theory: Gman is thin at one end; much, much thicker in the middle and then thin again at the far end.

Snapping or giant?

G man could totally be a turtle. How do you know he’s not from an alien race of turtles than can just appear to be human? What if gordon sees him as a man, but everyone else is just humoring gordon, a schizophrenic, while he stares at a turtle?

And what if this forum doesn’t exist at all and you’re just having an elaborate dream?

Maybe it’s time to wake up, Fancy Pants… Wake up and smell the ashes!

Right. You’re not supposed to be here. Forget all this.

Oh god… suddenly it all makes sense to me! The g man is a combine turtle, the cherished pet of an advisor. The g man was tired of taking the advisors abuse and broke free to help gordon freeman take down the combine, but all of this is just a dream of mine. Half life doesn’t exist.
My mind has been thoroughly blown.

swoosh.

Goo fuhh yooooo!

I sure hope that was just a random joke, and not a reference to Oedipus.

What’s in the Box has already been revealed as a project by some random guy. There’s interviews with him on Youtube, actually. I believe he said he made it just to prove you can make something cool with little to no budget or something of the sort.

i don’t think he really needed to prove that

To Gman, every human just chess.Gman is playing the chess.

Hes a poet, that Eric Fong.
