Gman is the Mothman of Half Life :freeman:
The only issue with the Q idea is that the whole being in contract thing at the end of hl2. I dont imagine Q would really care about a bidding war. But its a pretty dam good idea maybe powerfull but not quite ominipotent after all the vortigaunts to cause some trouble.
Theres another time you see G-man interacting wth another person is just before little odessa, through the telescope he looks like hes talking to Odessa cubbage.
Because it was the only way to get rid of the nihilanth.
If the nihilanth had succeeded in his invasion of earth, chances are all information on the technology would have been destroyed with it, the nihilanth wouldn’t allow this information to exist, and therefor give the combine a way to control xen.
Which is i imagine, why they created the nihilanth in the first place ( also to control the vorts, something i imagine they couldn’t do otherwise. )
Except he went rogue.
Would you like to know more?
G-man isnt the deus ex, freeman is.
Xen’s invasion happened only because Gman gave Gordon the crystal to open the portal. So again why would Gman do that if he didn’t want that Combine to have portal technology? No point in answering really.
the Gman is Dr. Kleiner. No doubt and no proof against it.
Fugg you Shadow.
I just told you, oh right you want me to spell it out simply… I’l go through what i think has happened in the series so far.
- Long time ago ( dimension far far away )
G-man is in control of Xen, as an interdimensional beurocrat Xen is the ultimate tool.
The combine are having trouble enslaving the vort’s due to vortesance, through their technology they create the Nihilanth to control them on mass.
The Nihilanth however has extreme powers due to being in part a vort ( something i don’t think the combine intended ) he rebels against his creators and flee’s to Xen.
The G-man doesn’t have control of Xen anymore, and cannot directly influence the Nihilanth.
The G-man makes a deal with the combine, he will give them a way/world to fight the Nihilanth on, so that he can keep control.
- HL1.
The G-man instigates the resonance cascade.
In doing so he believes the Nihilanth will invade earth, and in turn destroy all the technology and personnel associated with portal technology.
However Gordon Freeman prematurely destroys the Nihilanth before the combine can get there.
- Between HL1 and 2.
The combine come to earth anyway, the G-man believes that they will destroy everything in their path, and what is left of the science personnel will die in the destruction.
However G-man underestimates Breen, who makes a deal with the combine, who know’s the blackmesa science personnel, giving them the potential to aquire the technology after all.
The annihilation of humanity is put on hold in favour of aquiring the technology, the G-man is not happy about the consequences for Xen this might have.
- HL2.
The G-man uses Gordon Freeman to teach the combine a lesson, crippling their power on earth.
I believe at the end of HL2 the combine gave in to the G-man, and decided on a truce, agreeing perhaps to simply wipe the resistance out, taking no further steps to aquire the technology.
However, the vort’s decided to rescue Freeman, and with him free from the G-man’s direct control and now still a problem for the combine, the truce ended practically as it began.
- EP1.
Now, with the super portal codes now in resistance hands, and the chance of it not opening, the combine start to panic. They decide to go ahead with their plans to get the technology anyway, now the G-man is of no use, putting as much effort into finding the Borealis as possible. ( I believe the G-man would of used Gordon to destroy the Borealis anyway )
- EP2.
The G-man now has to destroy the Borealis without direct control of Freeman ( I don’t believe he is ‘told’ to, but he simply can’t ( G-man lies! ))
To do this he uses Alyx, and through her he will ‘shock’ Eli into ordering the destruction of the Borealis, without this message I believe Eli would of agreed with Kleiner.
However, he wasn’t expecting the combine to panic as much as they do, going as far as to come out into the open and be that vunerable.
Now that the combine have the borealis co-ordinates, and may soon have the ability to call in reinforcments, everything goes into overdrive.
- EP3.
CANT WAIT!
No need to elaborate on that, the Vortigaunts were enslaved in HL1 (hence the collars), and Freeman just liberated them (that’s partially why the refer to him as the Freeman, or the Free-man)
Mented,
“The G-man instigates the resonance cascade.
In doing so he believes the Nihilanth will invade earth, and in turn destroy all the technology and personnel associated with portal technology.”
See, your theory, though it is interesting, is heavily flawed. I say this yet again. If Gman does not want the Combine to ge their hads on portal technology, he wouldn’t open the floodgates and expect it to be destroyed in the fray and thus allow the Combine to simply walk all over everybody.
Yep, there’s this site: https://www.members.shaw.ca/halflifestory/timeline.htm
That’s giving a possible theory, and imo, it actually looks more acceptable than the one given by Mented, though I must say it’s not a bad one.
@George: What? Stop just asking the same questions when i’ve given you an answer twice. I have to spell everything out for your VERY slowly dont i…
If the nihilanth where to invade earth, knowing the combine wouldn’t be far behind, do you think the nihilanth would allow any of the human portal technology to exist? Knowing full well the combine would want it?
Of course not, and the g-man would know this.
Where are the rest of these heavy flaws?
DRIcecream: Aye it’s a good site that one, For the most part i’d agree with it, however i dont on some points
1 being that i believe the g-man has worked with combine before. Why else would he want the nihilanth to invade earth? To fight the combine? What? Surely theres better ways…
2 If he had wanted to destroy the combine in the first place why would he wipe out everyone’s best chances of doing so? And what is the threat the combine pose to him BEFORE the resonance cascade?
Also, why would the combine go to all the effort of letting the resistance exist at all? If they wanted it wiped out they could, extremely easily, as we can see in both episode 1 and 2. Their being to carefull in who they kill.
But hey, maybe i’m wrong, perhaps he did just want to bait the combine to earth so he can attack their homeworld… with what exactly is an odd one to me.
I think people give the g-man far to much credit. And i dont think he’s part of some interstellar rebel alliance lol that just seems very odd to me. If he where, do you not think he’d be helping the human resistance a hell of alot more? He doesn’t care how many get wiped out in the citadel explosion.
And the whole “attack on the combine homeworld” they think he’s got planned just seems ludicrous.
I don’t think the Nihilanth was planning a total invasion on Earth starting with Black Mesa. Just look at the first troops he sent: headcrabs and vorts. If he really doing an invasion, he would sent his grunts first.
And another reason: in Half-Life 1, all the creatures were spawning at random places, with no sigh of strategic planning.
Where did i say that the nihilanth planned the invasion? Where do you get that idea from?
He didn’t know of the resonance cascade until it happened, when it did, he saw it as an opportunity to get a foot hold on something out of the borderworld. G-man knew he would.
He was clearly gearing up for an invasion towards the end of the game, the factories where churning out tons of grunts, and the platform you get sent to if you don’t take up the G-mans offer? What was that then? Grunt disco?
Also, the nihilanth was keeping the dimensional rift open, why would he want to keep it open unless he planned to move across, or at least move an army across? And no not ALL the creatures RANDOMLY spawned in, they did at first, due to the cascade, but towards the end there where alot that weren’t random.
VirginityRocks pretty much hits it on the head, and I’m sticking with this theory.
Most likely.
Most obvious.
Most boring.
says you.
Virginity speaks as if G-Man was the “gatekeeper” long before Gordon killed the Nihilanth.
At the end of HL1, G-Man says :“the border world Xen is now under OUR control, thanks to you”.
There’s a possibility that Xen was a region of interest for many “corporations”, including G-Man’s. But the weird thing is: why they expected a human to bring down Xen’s defenses? Unless, the humans did it first. It’s like G-Man and others like him didn’t had a direct access to the border world.
Yeah says me.
Sorry but would you not be at least a tad disapointed if that where to be it? If it where that simple?
@Paradox: G-man talks alot of shit, OUR could simply mean MY.
Also, he didn’t expect Freeman to do any of what he did, he didn’t have it planned for him to wipe out the nihilanth single handedly.
G-man clearly had direct access to Xen, he talks to you in it, at the end.
What he didn’t have, was access to it whilst the Nihilanth was there, or at least, any of the areas the Nihilanth had control over ( the areas Freeman goes )
But G-Man was expecting someone from Earth to do the dirty job of liberating (as you say, Mented) the other areas of Xen. Otherwise, he wouldn’t managed to have Eli accepting the crystal test.
He should had knowlege of the military side of the Black Mesa research personel (just hear the HEV suit first radio communications: it has reactive armor and ammo storage). He could be expecting some sort of reaction of the humans when the resonance cascade started (the bodies of the other humans in Xen). But, not a reaction so strong as he saw.
If G-man does have god-like (or is god) abilities, he might be doing this for his own amusement. What better way to spend your time than causing a war between worlds, and if this was his intention he probably made Gordon to be a “power-player” to make it a lot more interesting.
