And didn’t the christian/catholic god say that he made us in his likeness, so I’m sure in that particular perspective we’re more important than a fly.

More important only in the sense that a fly is more important to us than a bacterium.
This is starting to stray into “Ask a Christian” territory, and I don’t know how qualified I am to answer this.
However, Christian scriptures seem to be quite clear in the sense that God still lords over humanity, and that he may do anything he wishes to us.

Speaking of freedom of speech, I just read that the Canadian government pulled thousands of personal and small business websites offline, in order to get rid of a single website which was a parody of the Canadian environmental agency, created by activists and claiming the Canadian government had changed their position on a type of environmentally dangerous oil drilling.

Canada’s been notoriously bad about freedom of speech…I remember a while back a blogger was brought before some board they’ve got over there because he wrote something potentially offensive to muslims, or something like that. I’d have to do some more research for the details, but apparently he got smacked around pretty bad by this government board.

Of course we are hypocrites. We don’t even follow these laws. And we even kill animals who are similarly self-conscious and intelligent to 1-year-old babies, just to eat them.

(referring to pigs and chimpanzees, the latter being eaten by Japanese people, for instance)

I believe in freedom of speech, but there are some people that really make me mad. I think, that although you have “Freedom” of speech, there should be a barrier as to how far you can stretch that Freedom. People who protest things, and cause problems make excuses that it is their freedom of speech. Like I said, I agree in freedom of speech, but there is a line that you can cross in pretty much every thing, and once that line is crossed, I don’t care about your freedom of speech if you don’t respect others and use the rights you’ve been given intelligently.
