There is no precedent for having extreme levels of scalable graphics really. Crysis looks fucking great but trying running it on a PC with lower minspec or something. The fact is that design principles vary based on poly budgets and stuff. Something that looks good low poly will not necessarily look good if you just add more polys to it. This is why Black Mesa has taken so long to make. They can’t just reskin lower graphic stuff. Also this is why demakes are not a one day project either. In order to change technical prowess of a game you need to redesign the art. Which is a large amount of cost for little gain. PC games are made to run in what is a relatively small range of computer strengths. Beauty is not numbers, beauty does not scale easily like numbers do. It takes time and talent to create.

I dont want the game to jump from doom1 to crysis 2 graphics when i set graphics from low to high. I want to have higher res textures, more fancy shaders, and more polies on props and chcaracters. You dont need to redo anything for that, just make high quality models in first place and then scale down the textures for the consoles. Or upscale the existing textures, every beginner modder can do that.

Not only this but the mod teams that make graphic overhauls very rarely make change shaders or anything. Which is again important to appearance. Unless you enjoy your games all uncanny valley.

CS is a competitive game, and in competitive games you do not want / need a mess of clutter. People need to be able to quickly recognize and distinguish things and high map graphics fidelity distracts from this.

Furthermore in well designed multi-player maps detail is used as more than detail it is a tool. Players are drawn to more visually interesting areas and you use this to guide players.

Another thing to note is that not everything has been shown of CS:GO so you cannot truly judge their merits yet. It is not unlike valve to keep aces up their sleeves.

What I don’t think a lot of you realized this about this game but valve is in a fucked if ya do fucked if you don’t situation here.

Change a little = Competive players complain (or at least comp players and every other pubstar who likes to think they are comp)

Change a lot = Average players still don’t give a fuck

Awesome graphics = complain they shoulda spent more time on gameplay and you can’t run it well

Mediocre graphics = complain about bad graphics
