FEAR Radio Chatter - HECU Voice Replacement.

Chances are that’ll be done before this, maybe you could help direct me to it then. I’m going to bed soon anyway, I’ve got it mostly sorted, although I admit I’ve spent a fair amount of time procrastinating. :zip:

Do you mean having the grunts speak with the young voice, and the medics speak with the gruff voice?

1: Sound info files are in BMS/Scripts, npc_sounds_X.txt. There’s some helpful stuff about them here (though I’ve seen a few fields in BMS’ scripts which aren’t mentioned).
Unfortunately, it looks like most of the grunts’ sounds can’t be fiddled with there (NOW I remember why I hadn’t done it previously…). They seem to use a more complex system involving .vcds. If anyone could figure out how to modify sound attenuation in those, I’d love to know.

 1. I did indeed… listening to these files individually though, I think your approach of using the young hgrunt sounds for all the marines is the best idea.

Alright, finally organising the sounds into a folder for testing. Shame I don’t quite understand the .vcd system, it’d be nice to have more sounds than what’s already being replaced. I mean I can see what makes it work, I think, I just can’t make it work for myself.

Actually, fuck it, I’ll test it anyway, my other tests might not be valid in this situation (getting him to call out a headcrab is different than giving him additional ‘idle’ speech). We’ll see how that goes. I’ll report back with the results when I get around to it.

Edit:

No dice. Huh, I’m not sure if I’m just doing it wrong, or if it’s just not possible. I’m not familliar with how the .vcd’s work, so I’m not sure what’s up with it.

I’ll just work with replacing existing sounds then, at least for now, I might look it up later to see how it works.

Sounds replaced, though they’re pretty quiet, I’m not sure what to do about that. I could upload it as-is for those who want to see it.

Did you boost them through audacity first? Might help. But yeah, upload a video or the files so we can have a look!

I can try audacity, but I’ll be honest, I have absolutely no experience with sound editing sound, nor do I have any for making videos (unless you count recordings on livestream).

I’ll upload the files as-is for now, meanwhile I’ll download Audacity and see if there’s anything I can do.

Edit: Files are here, ready for use: https://www.dropbox.com/s/i9j1ka8zxzpm30s/fear%20grunt%20sounds.rar

Update: Okay, I think I know what I’m doing now, I’ll work on making the sounds louder and hopefully I’m doing this the right way :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh god I tried to open them all at once thinking it’ll let me edit them all, nope! It tried to open 139 instances of itself and almost crashed my computer :fffuuu:

Hmm, I’m not sure if I installed it incorrectly or something isn’t working with the sound files, but the grunts seem to have no sound whatsoever now. Your readme says replace the hgrunt and hgrunt_young with the folders provided, but there only seems to be a hgrunt folder in the zip.

I’m sure they have sound, it’s probably just quiet, that’s what I’m trying to fix right now.

Also I wasn’t very clear in the instructions since this is basically just a wip, but you’re supposed to just use the sounds from that folder to replace both hgrunt and hgrunt_young (the reason is that hgrunt_young has more files than hgrunt, so if you just overwrite them, some of the old ones will still remain, I’ll probably address this later, just not yet seeing as this isn’t meant to be the final release).

Anyway, I figured out how to open multiple files in Audacity, but now I can’t figure out how to save them without it mixing them all into one (very ear-rapey) sound.

Maybe try this? https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Batch_Processing
Also, for experimentations sake, could you try lowering the pitch of the sounds to make them resemble the deeper grunt voices from HL1?
Ah, it works now, sweet. Gotta say, these new sounds make them feel more like the elite killing machines they’re supposed to be, rather than the confused, scared sounding original voices.

I’ve learned how to open and save multiple tracks without mixing them (although I do have to click “OK” 139 times), so that should be easy to try out.

I’m going to test out the ‘loud’ versions now, and see if they work out in-game. If all goes well, I’ll update the download, clean it up a little so it’s more clear what to do (maybe see if it’s possible to redirect hgrunt_young’s path back to “hgrunt” so you don’t need 2 folders of the same thing sitting around?), and see if I can get a lower pitch version like you requested.

Cool, can’t wait to test it.

Very nice pack, but there’s still alot of things that need to be addressed, the young hgrunt sounds like you mentioned and the volume. Still, very nice, they make the hgrunts intimidating now.

Just tested it, sounds good to me. Dropbox link should be updated with the louder files now. Also updated the readme, which I wrote in a hurry because I was busy figuring out how to use Audacity. The readme should actually make sense now :retard:

Next up, I’ll see if I can mess with the pitch and whatever else, to get a deeper HL1 style feel from it. I’m not sure if I’ll do that /right now/ though, but I’ll update you with the results whenever I do get it.

Minor Edit:

Changed one line in the pack (HG_MEDIC10). It’s only used once in the game (in this sound pack), for the poor guy getting eaten by Snarks in FAF. Created a new one from other sounds: it’s now “Help! Get this thing off me! Helpgetitoff!

Minor Edit 2:

Replaced HG_IDLE1 and HG_IDLE2 with sounds similar to HL1, while I liked the “intruder” line, you’d hear it every time you encountered idle grunts, sometimes several times in a row. The frequency at which it was repeated was just way too high for such an obviously unique line, to the point where it broke immersion.

This might be the last update, I cannot think of anything else that needs improving at the moment, but I’m open to feedback. I might see if I can make any worthwhile conversations to replace the scripted ones, but that might be getting ahead of myself. I’ll try it if enough people think I should, we’ll see.

@Brokenfridge; I did mess around with the pitch and several other effects, but I couldn’t get it to sound like HL1 or even close, it just ended up sounding muffled or distorted (in the bad way), sorry :frowning:

Hmmm, that’s alright, thanks for trying anyhow. They sound pretty good as they are now, It just reminds me of FEAR a bit too much sometimes. I messed around with them in Audacity as well, had no idea what I was doing. I wonder if there’s any other software that could process the sounds to make them more like the original voices?

Can someone make a video with the sounds replaced?

I won’t but my only problem with this pack was I was worried the sound quality would be jarring switching back between FEAR dialogue and the few BM lines still in the folder.

It’s not.

youtube video please

I’ve never made any videos before (well I made one for HL1 a couple years ago, but it wouldn’t let me upload it) and I lack any recording equipment. Source has a recorder but I’m not sure how it works or how to upload things :retard:

My friend makes videos, I’ll talk to her.

Concerning lowering the pitch sound of the voices to make them sound deeper, try taking a look at this software, Audio Pitch & Shift.
I haven’t used it and it says it’s mainly for musicians, but I’m sure it’s capable of changing the pitch of any common sound file.

Good work so far. Seems to be integrated pretty flawlessly, and the original grunt voices, when they pop up in scripted scenes and such don’t grate at all.
